I found the book totally engaging. Perhaps it is not for everyone but critics should be reminded that Jill`s personality shines through at the end chapters. Bythen most of us feel very interested in her personal views even if we dont agree with all of it. The writing is not amatuerish as one critic posted Jill has made an exceptional contribution to so many in our society with her memoir.

I heard of My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor after attending a stroke support group meeting as an assignment while I was a student in a Physical Therapist Assistant program. My father also had a stroke in 2008 so I was interested in reading about a medical professional’s account of what was happening to their body as they themselves were experiencing a stroke. This book was much more than I was expecting. As a medical professional myself now I wasn’t sure if Dr. Bolte Taylor would sound very clinical and dive into lecturing, but it was quite the opposite. Dr. Bolte Taylor did explain some neuro anatomy and structures affected during her stroke but she expressed her thoughts in such detail they were so powerful, human and gripping. As I read, I was so moved by her courage and determination to push through and focus on her recovery. I loved how she reflected on relearning everything and appreciated her right hemisphere where creativity lies waiting to be explored and how she embraced her artistic side after her stroke. This is a fantastic book I highly recommend for anyone even if you don’t have a relative who’s had a stroke or even if you don’t work in the medical field Dr. Bolte Taylor explains her story in a way that’s so moving any reader will walk away from it with compassion and so many lessons.

What do you get when you have a brain scientist, with a Ph. D., experience a stroke, survive, and then fully recover? You get a pretty amazing book detailing the experience and recounting a remarkable journey back to recovery. On December 10, 1996, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a 37-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, suffered a major brain hemorrhage of the left side of her brain. As a result of her training, she had the knowledge, insight, and wherewithal to understand what was taking place and remarkably was able to seek help while her brain and body were failing her.The book begins with a couple of chapters of her background prior to the stroke and then progresses to the day of the stroke. Her recounting of the day of the stroke is filled with incredible detail, especially considering the mental deterioration she was experiencing. We learn how she was able to survive and her incredible journey back where she needed to relearn everything, even the simplest of things like feeding herself, walking, reading, writing, and so many things we take for granted.Dr. Jill says it took her 8 years to fully recover from her stroke. She's put together an incredible book of her journey and she's been a guest on a number of different shows. She even has an 18-minute TedTalk on her idea worth spreading.1,683 Amazon reviewers have given this an average of 4.6 stars. Goodreads shows a 3.86 rating after 18,345 ratings and 2,887 reviews. I absolutely love the study of our brain's neuroplasticity. This first half of this book was amazing but it slowed a little in the second half. I give it a 5-star for the first half and 3-star for the second for a total 4-star rating.

MY STROKE OF INSIGHT REVIEWWe are fortunate that Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, author of “My Stroke of Insight,” is a brain scientist with enough fortitude to survive a stroke, intellect to examine the experience, patience to overlook medical ignorance, and a willingness to share her adversity. It is also a delight to have a communicator with writing skills and the ability to dumb down her discussion to my level, a step above a cement mixer. One passage in her book asks the us, the readers, to imagine having our natural facilities, speech, vision, hearing, movement, memory, sensation, suddenly stripped away from our consciousness, leaving us with a peaceful heart and afloat in a sea of euphoria. You simply blend into a world of glorious emptiness until blessed sleep quiets the world around you. You awake to the same euphoria until you sleep again. Sounds peaceful if you reject life. One amazing aspect I saw here was Dr. Taylor’s ability to fight through her loss of mental capacity and realize that she would have to keep struggling if she was going make any sense of what was happening. As a clinician, she was determined to keep a mental awareness of the debilitation that was overtaking her. To have retained the impressions and impulses of an empty mind seems to be a remarkable achievement; her dedication seems relentless.I was moved by her exasperation with the medical community and its inability to evolve into a more caring and understanding world than they normally inhabit. The ability to communicate with a person in Dr. Taylor‘s condition seemed alien to their way of providing care. This is a phenomenon that has frustrated many patients, although most are not as badly injured as Dr. Taylor. I suspect that her criticism may have positive effects. The author starts her book with a simple exploration of the brain and its functions. We relive the morning she had her stroke, a relentless narrative of her injury. I actually tried to shy away from her descriptions of senses leaving the body and mind. I was anxious trying to figure out how she was going to get help. Then we arrive at the hospital and a world where help is expected, but seemed a great agitation to Dr. Taylor because of the hustle and bustle that aggravated her injury because of the noise.Eventually Dr. Taylor leaves the hospital in the company of her mother, a remarkable woman with the same fortitude and determination, who, sadly, passed away in December 2015. We agonize through Dr. Taylor’s slow return to partial functionality with Mom as a patient caretaker, experience a complex surgical procedure to her brain, and eventually work our way back to a nearly normal life. It’s a fantastic journey that will have you clenching your fingers and curling your toes as you physically experience the dismaying world of confusion and hopelessness. Learn from it and don’t miss it.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

1- "Another lesson I learned early is that there is nothing new in Wall Street. There can't be because speculation is as old as the hills. Whatever happens in the stock market to-day has happened before and will happen again. I've never forgotten that. I suppose I really manage to remember when and how it happened. The fact that I remember that way is my way of capitalizing experience."2- "It takes a man a long time to learn all the lessons of all his mistakes. They say there are two sides to everything. But there is only one side to the stock market; and it is not the bull side or the bear side, but the right side. It took me longer to get that general principle fixed firmly in my mind than it did most of the more technical phases of the game of Stock speculation."3- "If the unusual never happened there would be no difference in people and then there wouldn't be any fun in life. The game would become merely a matter of addition and subtraction. It would make of us a race of bookkeepers with with plodding minds. It's the guessing that develops a man's brain power. Just consider what you have to do to guess right."4- "There is nothing like losing all you have in the world for teaching you what not to do. And when you know what not to do in order not to lose money, you begin to learn what to do in order to win. Did you get that ? You begin to learn!"5- "After spending many years m Wall Street and after making and losing millions of dollars I want to tell you this: It never was my thinking that made the big money for me. It always was my sitting. Got that? My sitting tight! It is no trick at all to be right on the market. You always find lots of early bulls in bull markets and early bears in bear markets. I've known many men who were right at exactly the right time, and began buying or selling stocks when prices were at the very level which should show the greatest profit. And their experience invariably matched mine--that is, they made no real money out of it. Men who can both be right and sit tight are uncommon. I . I found it one of the hardest things to learn. But it is only after a stock operator has firmly grasped this that he can make big money. It is literally true that millions come easier to a trader after he knows how to trade than hundreds did in the days of his ignorance."6- "The reason is that a man may see straight and clearly and yet become impatient or doubtful when the market takes its time about doing as he figured it must do. That is why so many men in Wall Street, who are not at all in the sucker class, not even in the third grade, nevertheless lose money. The market does not beat them. They beat themselves, because though they have brains they cannot sit tight."7- "Even as a lad I always got my own meanings out of such facts as I observed. It is the only way in which the meaning reaches me. I cannot get out of facts what somebody tells me to get. They are my facts, don't you see? If I believe something you can be sure it is because I simply must."8- "A stock speculator sometimes makes mistakes and knows that he is making them. And after he makes them he will ask himself why he made them; and after thinking over it cold-bloodedly a long time after the pain of punishment is over he may learn how he came to make them, and when, and at what particular point of his trade; but not why. And then he simply calls himself names and lets it go at that. Of course, if a man is both wise and lucky, he will not make the same mistake twice. But he will make any one of the ten thousand brothers or cousins of the original. The Mistake family is so large that there is always one of them around when you want to see what you can do in the fool-play line."9- "The weaknesses that all men are prone to are fatal to success in speculation--usually those very weaknesses that make him likable to his fellows or that he himself particularly guards against in those other ventures of his where they are not nearly so dangerous as when he is trading in stocks or commodities. The speculator's chief enemies are always boring from within. It is inseparable from human nature to hope and to fear. In speculation when the market goes against you you hope that every day will be the last day--and you lose more than you should had you not listened to hope--to the same ally that is so potent a success-bringer to empire builders and pioneers, big and little. And when the market goes your way you become fearful that the next day will take away your profit, and you get out--too soon. Fear keeps you from making as much^money as you ought to. The successful trader has to fight these two deep-seated instincts. He has to reverse what you might call his natural impulses. Instead of hoping he must fear; instead of fearing he must hope. He must fear that his loss may develop into a much bigger loss, and hope that his profit may become a big profit. It is absolutely wrong to gamble in stocks the way the average man does."10- "The professional concerns himself with doing the right thing rather than with making money, knowing that the profit takes care of itself if the other things are attended to. A trader gets to play the game as the professional billiard player does--that is, he looks far ahead instead of considering the particular shot before him. It gets to be an instinct to play for position."11- "A trader, in addition to studying basic conditions, remembering market precedents and keeping in mind the psychology of the outside public as well as the limitations of his brokers, must also know himself and provide against his own weaknesses. There is no need to feel anger over being human."12- "A bear tip is distinct, positive advice to sell short. But the inverted tip that is, the explanation that does not explain--serves merely to keep you from wisely selling short. The natural tendency when a stock breaks badly is to sell it. There is a reason--an unknown reason but a good reason; therefore get out. But it is not wise to get out when the break is the result of a raid by an operator, because the moment he stops the price must rebound. Inverted tips!"13- "The belief in miracles that all men cherish is born of immoderate indulgence in hope. There are people who go on hope sprees periodically and we all know the chronic hope drunkard that is held up before us as an exemplary optimist. Tip-takers are all they really are."14- "I have found that experience is apt to be steady dividend payer in this game and that observation gives you the best tips of all. The behaviour of a certain stock is all you need at times. You observe it. Then experience shows you how to profit by variations from the usual, that is, from the probable."15- "The manipulator to-day has no more need to consider what they did and how they did it than a cadet at West Point need study archery as practiced by the ancients in order to increase his working knowledge of ballistics. On the other hand there is profit in studying the human factors--the ease with which human beings believe what it pleases them to believe; and how they allow themselves-- or by the dollar-cost of the average man's carelessness. Fear and hope remain the same; therefore the study of the psychology of speculators is as valuable as it ever was. Weapons change, but strategy remains strategy, on the New York Stock Exchange as on the battlefield."16- "Speculation in stocks will never disappear. It isn't desirable that it should. It cannot be checked by warnings as to its dangers. You cannot prevent people from guessing wrong no matter how able or how experienced they may be. Carefully laid plans will miscarry because the unexpected and even the unexpectable will happen. Disaster may come from a convulsion of nature or from the weather, from your own greed or from some man's vanity; from fear or from uncontrolled hope. But apart from what one might call his natural foes, a speculator in stocks has to contend with certain practices or abuses that are indefensible morally as well as commercially."17- "But today, a '"an is trading in everything; almost every industry in the world is represented. It requires more time and more work to keep posted and to that extent stock speculation has become much more difficult for those who operate intelligently."

This book is excellent. Great for beginners to seasoned veterans. However, this publisher/editor that released this copy did a terrible job on this book. It is riddled with grammar and spelling errors. This book must be public domain so this company just threw it together without even running a thorough spell check. Do yourself a favor and spend a few dollars extra and go with another publisher on Amazon. Here is just a snippet...

A timeless classic! This book examines the thoughts, strategies, and practices of one of the all time best speculators. The author uses a pseudo name for the character. The subject is Jesse Livermore. Livermore has often been quoted by modern day market guru's, for good reason. He was perhaps the first to understand the power of the trend. His methods are as sound today as they were in his time. I first heard of Livermore while studying William J. O'Neil's masterpiece "How to Make Money in Stocks." Reading this book, along with the actual writings of Livermore, it's easy to see how O'Neil was inspired by his work. If you are a serious trader or just getting started, this is a book to add to your study.

This is a historical fiction that follows the real life of Jesse Livermore, one of the greatest stock/commodity traders in U.S. history. I highly recommend that you read this in conjunction with the biography of Jesse Livermore. You need to have both perspectives to understand the whole person. .While there is much to learn from Livermore's investing rules, his life is more like a Shakespearean tragedy. He was obsessed with stock trading and speculation, to the point of addiction. With great personal discipline, he mastered the art of taking big risk for a gigantic reward. However, his personal life was a mess that led to his downfall and suicide. His personal life was in many ways the exact opposite of his stock trading life: no rules, no discipline, no insight, and lavish living with no limits. Overall a very sad story.

In the age of Reg FD and high frequency trading, how insightful can the 'reminiscences of a stock operator'/expert 'tape reader' from almost a century ago be? It turns out, quite a bit. Although the tools may have changed, human psychology is still the same and the book is full of insights that anyone who has played around in the market or chosen it as a career will surely appreciate. There are also a number of fun stories depicting the wild ride of investing in the markets before regulations really kicked in.The book isn't the easiest to digest though and parts do tend to drag due to datedness or loose structuring. By that, I mean there isn't much cohesion to the book.I firmly believe anyone who invests themselves will get something out of this book. As an aside, I read the attractively priced Kindle edition - fine, but there were a number of typos and copy editing issues.

If you grew up in Chicago during the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s (before the arrival of "Great America" caught on), you will want to read the history of this awesome landmark! AMAZING pictures that help bring back a LOT of memories of this amusement park that entertain millions of families in the area. Made me miss the feel of a small amusement park.

As a former village employee I enjoyed all the pictures and Mr Wenz' s recollections. I didn't give five stars because I didn't think it was very well written. Any former employees or guests(of any of the three locations) would probably like the reminders of a magical time and place.

I remember Santa's Village when I was growing up & wanted to bring back my childhood !!! Thanks for an enjoyable book !!!

I first heard about Santa's Village (near Santa Cruz) in the 1960's, from a children's magazine ("Highlights for Children"?), but - mom said it was too far too drive, so we never went there. We lived 1/2 hour from Disneyland, so of course I was (and remain) a monorail fan, and I never knew there was a Santa's Village much closer to us (Skyforest) with the same "BumbleBee" monorail ride as Scott's Valley.Unfortunately, this book is written by people from the Santa's Village in Dundee, IL., so there are no photos - or even mention of the BumbleBee, which I never got to see or ride. Other than that, it's a refreshing look at a bygone era; a simpler time, when Disney was NOT the only one with a vision of kids and parents having fun together.

This book brings back so many wonderful memories of the Dundee Santa's Village!! The snowball ride to the Frozen ice pole at the North Pole! Love this book!

Very nicely done. Excellent photo selection throughout the book. The captions are very informative. Having been Santa at the park for many years, the author is an authority on Santa's Village and his expertise shines through.

The Chisellers (Agnes Browne Series), by Brendan O'Carroll

Amazon.com Review

In his introduction to this second episode in the rollicking trilogy that began with The Mammy (1994), Brendan O'Carroll explains that his greatest surprise and pleasure, in the wake of his newfound literary success, was meeting people who told him it was the first book they had ever read. And it's easy to imagine how new readers would be drawn in by engaging, larger-than-life characters, colorful dialogue, and high-spirited plot. The Chisellers opens in 1970, with the widow Agnes Browne still struggling to raise her brood (the chisellers of the title) alone, although the broad-shouldered Mark is now an apprentice carpenter and Rory, his gay brother, is an apprentice hair stylist. Agnes may be too caught up in her exciting bingo win of 310 pounds to notice that little Dermot is developing a dangerous taste for shoplifting, but she frequently wrings her hands over Frankie, a neo-Nazi thug who has been expelled from school. Into this flurry of daily concerns and excitements comes a letter from the local housing authority, notifying her that all the indigent families in her neighborhood are being relocated from their shabby but familiar tenements in the center of Dublin to new houses in a distant suburb. At the sad but raucous farewell party at the pub, Agnes sits drinking cider "in her usual corner," remembering her best friend, Marion, who died three years before: "Ah Jaysus, Marion, listen to them!" she muses. "The music of The Jarro! Will we ever hear the likes of it again?" The music to which Agnes referred could not be played on any instrument, but was the cackle of voices and rhythmic banter of the inner-city folk, the symphony of unanswered questions and impossible statements, that were so much of the colour of Dublin: "Hey, Mr. Foley. A vodka with ice--and fresh ice, none of that frozen stuff!" This would be followed by a howl of laughter. As you read, it is impossible not to envision a feel-good film of The Chisellers (Anjelica Huston directed The Mammy) and to admire O'Carroll's comic skill, even if his sunny, too-tidy conclusion to the novel makes Frank McCourt read like Dostoyevsky. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly

By turns funny, wise and heartbreaking, this Irish Tales of the City is O'Carroll's second book in his Mrs. Browne trilogy; the first, The Mammy, received high praise after publication in the U.S. last year. Featuring eccentric characters who are charming, irreverent and believable, the story continues in 1973 with Agnes Browne at center stage. A widow raising six sons and a daughter, whom she refers to collectively as the "chisellers," she lives in public housing in inner-city Dublin. Agnes is no angel, which makes her all the more human; she chain-smokes, likes a pint or two of an evening and has a sweet-dispositioned boyfriend, a French immigrant named Pierre, who works at a pizza joint and is endlessly patient with Agnes and her rambunctious brood. Mark Browne is the oldest; at 17, he is apprenticed to a furniture-maker whose business is failing. How Mark saves the business and wins the girl of his dreams inform the main storyline, but each of the siblings and Agnes get their fair share of attention. Frankie, the next in age, is involved with violent local skinheads. After he and his gang brutally beat his younger brother, Rory, a subsequent act further tarnishes Frankie's reputation and outrages his family. This lively novel features a wedding, a funeral and an ending that will melt the hardest heart. Readers will eagerly await the third book in this series. (Mar.) FYI: The film version of The Mammy, starring Anjelica Huston, is currently in release. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The perfect book in a series of books that make you laugh, cry and enjoy. The author developed the characters in a manner you can see them as they pull off some of the funniest stuff that makes you laugh to tears, cry from sadness, revel in victories and simply enjoy the lives he created. They are also caring, compassionate, naughty and very lovable. Great job, Brendan!!! I first listened to this as audio books and admit if I wasn't done with the book by the end of my journey I would drive around before stopping at my hotel just so I could delight in the final chapter. I enjoyed the audio so much I decided I had to have a copy of the written script versions as well. That's how good this series is!!

A complete waste of time, Brendan has one story, and he's managed to beat it to death with far too many books and a tired BBC show. He's made millions re-hashing this essay of typical Irish working-class living, and the irritating thing is, it's not even his story. His mother didn't scrape and scratch or struggle to make ends meet selling running a vegetable stand while raising six kids. Honestly, I've read better essays written by young students, and I think Mr. O'Carroll just happens to be good at two things: capitalizing on a beyond-average idea/narrative, and nepotism. His [huge hit (??)] TV/stage show, that is no better than a high-school play, is chock-full of talentless, droning family members and friends, pathetic toilet humor, and offensive 'Irishisms'. What really did me in was the mawkish dedication of this book to his first wife (his 'world' and 'life') and mother of his children, whom he soon ditched for the big, horsey Irish blonde he met while filming Agnes Brown (another waste of time). The lack of character is hardly surprising, but I wish we'd all stop throwing money at those who seem to thrive from it.

Brendan O'Carroll's entire Agnes Browne series is utterly hilarious. For all that unfortunate incidents are related without flinching, the dialogue would keep one all but rolling on the floor screaming. He also recreates a nostalgic, semi-magical 'old neighbourhood,' where friends are always there for one another in a pinch (...even if the children aren't the sum of perfection, the eldest is grand.) I've had many a laugh with these books, which are just the size to tuck into a bag for train trips and time in the park. The sexual content, by the way, is in no way offensive or explicit. (Violence is hinted at, rather than displayed in graphic detail, in a few sequences.)

We are huge fans of Brendon O'Carroll. Now we own the books we love and are lending them to many friends - who also love them. Great reading for anyone needing some smiles and laughs. This book is one of 4 in the Agnes Brown series. Make sure to start with the book "The Young Wan" - it is the prequel to the trilogy. O'Carroll is a fine writer with a big heart and a great sense of humor. If the 'F' word bothers you then it might be heavily used here but these characters live in the Dublin slums and have little to no education. I was wowed by the dialects and multi-plot engagement of all of the books. My teenage son loved them and so do friends of ours from his age into their 80's! One book hasa few dark scenes in London - but it is well worth reading as it is still a timely tale of the consquences of our choices.

This is a funny heartwarming story of a courageous woman and her children who face many obstacles and heartbreaks but manage to come out on top. With love and determination Agnes Browne holds her family together and does it with humor and common sense. Brendan weaves a good story and a there is almost always a great ending. You will want more when you have finished the book.

I wonder where the author finds slouch a wonderful family. The children do and say the things we would like to say in some instances. An easy and laugh filled read.

This is a hysterical look into the Irish youths of the days of yore. He is an absolute wonderful author who tells it as it was back in the time....maybe even today for all I know. He is a great writer....I have read everything he has written and enjoyed each one.

My mother loved reading Angela's Ashes so I was looking for a similar book for her. This was recommended. I took a chance and bought all three books by Brendan O'Carroll ( The Chisellers, The Granny and The Mammy ). You know it's a good book when you hear your 84 year old mother laughing out loud while reading it. She breezed through all three books non stop.

I LOVE this book. Such a wide variety of animals and they are all adorable and festive, and most importantly, well drawn. I turned this dog into my Bluetick Coonhound, and thought it was so fun.

I bought this for a little girl but once I received it and saw how cute it was I kept it for myself. Sorry Charlie.

This book is a great Christmas coloring book for kids of all ages and coloring skill level.

Simple, basic coloring pages with cute designs for kids and some adults...ones who don't like the greatly-detailed adult coloring books.

One of my favorites from Jade Summer! Adorable book!

Too cute!!! Did not disappoint!!

I love forest animals and in winter, wow! This is a good one!

Great color book
