I have nearly a complete degree in geology and one of my favorite topics was earthquakes and volcanoes. Like most individuals who enjoy studying this subject, the earthquake of 1906 is a must since it is one of the most heavily documented, particularly in photographic history, of any such event. I've read a number of books on the San Francisco quake, but this has got to be the best of its kind. The author spent some time working though the material evidence that has been kept in libraries since the event in order to recreate a thorough account of the earthquake, as much a human event as a geological one. While many works on the 1906 earthquake cover the impressions of famous people present during the disaster-Barrymore, Caruso and others-and describe the deaths and the firestorms, few cover the details of the political situation before and after the earthquake and the denial mentality that worked to create this disaster and in fact that of the 1980s quake--and will probably pave the way to the disaster of the next one as well. The earthquake was downplayed to the point where the question was "what earthquake? We don't have earthquakes here," while the firestorm which occurred after it as a result of broken gas mains and power lines in the presence of a failed water distribution system was emphasized. After all, everyone has fires, and measures can be taken to prevent them. Nothing can be done about earthquakes, even their prediction remains elusive. Unfortunately the efforts of commercial and financial interests in restoring the areas' reputation as a good investment site competitive with neighboring cities in the area, contributed extensively to the boom that put San Francisco on the map again so soon. Destroying whole forests as far north as Washington state and the lives of thousands of horses, literally worked to death in order to rebuild the city in record time, these politically powerful individuals managed to create another risky city.Amazing too was the political waltz that occurred both during and after the earthquake and fire storm. Pro- and anti-labor parties had been at one another's throats for some time, and the 1906 quake provided the impetus for a change in government that swept some people from power and others into office. As so often happens after a natural disaster-hurricaine Katrina being a case in point-much finger pointing occurred, an investigation was conducted, and at least one person was sent to jail.Interesting especially is the author's citation of a number of personal accounts collected years later by a professor interested in the psychological impact of the earthquake on young people's lives. These reveal that what we call post-traumatic stress syndrome was a common event following the earthquake. The book is a sweeping story of the end of an era for a California boom town. Now as ever, the weather is fantastic, the living leisurely--and the clock is ticking.

The late Philip Fradkin was a fantastic writer and this book is no exception. Of all the books I've read concerning the Great Earthquake, this is the very best! It is a delight to read, and it is so detailed and interesting. I have bought several copies of the hardbound version, because I know it is the best version of this event.I can also recommend just about any other book that Fradkin wrote, he was just such a great writer/researcher...

I'm halfway through, and it's getting harder to choke down sentences such as:"Like tufts of hair atop a bald head, two groups of structures would survive within the fire zone because of the actions of residents and employees."I get it, but seriously, we're not far from "It was a dark and stormy night" territory here.Time and time again, the author reaches for the cookie jar of bad metaphor without benefit of an editor to slap his hand away. The book, as a result, is bloated. (pardon me for adding my own, but I couldn't resist.)Such writing, and the inclusion of apparently every anecdote the author could locate make the book a third longer than it needs to be.Worth reading, but I wish a tough editor had read it before me.

Much new information, much better insights into how the City fought back when the disaster struck. In our times of repeated natural disasters, be they fires, earthquakes or threatened pandemics, this historical reconstruction of all the things people did to make the toll of the 06 earthquake even worse than it might have been is absolutely necessary reading. Anyone who would take up a hand to prepare for the next great disaster should read and understand all that went wrong back in 06.

After reading the above reviews, I choose this 1906 book over several others I had been looking at. This book is rather disjointed, nor does it capture the horror of that day in San Francisco. It does deal with the politics of the time, but this too skips about. I got to the end of the book without realizing the book was coming to a close, it just stopped. Overall, a boring overview of a national disaster.

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake remains the standard natural disaster and it is nowhere better covered than here. Written with a clear, lucid prose style, delivered in excellent condition and available at just the right price, this book is a must-have.

The book was one of the most trilling books I have ever read. I was required to read this text for a class and every part of the book describes San Francisco so well you feel as if you were there during the earthquake. The book is divided into three parts, Before the earthquake, During the earthquake, and After the earthquake. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting to read more.

Well written. Rev. Sims

The Second Kind of Impossible: The Extraordinary Quest for a New Form of Matter

Review

“A rare and compulsively readable blend of science and thriller, The Second Kind of Impossible tells of the quest to find a new type of matter that would rewrite the rules of reality. Paul Steinhardt, one of the world's leading theoretical physicists, takes readers on a wondrous odyssey across multiple decades and continents as, against all odds, he helps to topple scientific orthodoxy.” —Brian Greene, author of The Elegant Universe“Scientists, smugglers, and spies—this book is an exciting and enlightening scientific detective story. The tale is about far more than a new form of matter; it is also a thrilling and wonderfully written look at how science works.” —Walter Isaacson, author of Einstein“An epic account of two scientific triumphs: a thirty-year theoretical search for understanding and a real-world expedition into the wilds of Kamchatka. It is as if The Origin of Species and The Voyage of the Beagle had been published together in one volume.” —Freeman Dyson, author of Maker of Patterns“A truly amazing adventure story, full of twists and turns, right up to the very end. It has my strongest recommendation.” —Sir Roger Penrose, author of The Emperor’s New Mind“An intriguing blend of science and international adventure. [Steinhardt] takes readers on a wild ride in search of a new kind of matter…full of intrigue and adventure, culminating with the epic Kamchatka journey....A general audience can and should enjoy this original, suspenseful true-life thriller of science investigation and discovery.”  —Publishers Weekly“A gripping scientific quest…an admirable popular account of the quasicrystal, an oddball arrangement of atoms that seems to contradict scientific laws.…Steinhardt [is] a pioneer in the field and a fine writer.” —Kirkus Reviews"[A] memoir and rollercoaster adventure, packed with discovery, disappointment, exhilaration and persistence...This book is a front-row seat to history as it is made." —Nature Magazine"Part physics primer, part fantastic adventure...Steinhardt’s affection and admiration for the journey’s colorful cast of characters infuse every page. Although his excitement is palpable, he is also careful and methodical, often reminding himself that he could be wrong. The Second Kind of Impossible shows the benefit of a slow and steady approach to science, where determination and luck are just as important as insight." —Science News

About the Author

Paul J. Steinhardt is the Albert Einstein Professor in Science at Princeton University, where he is on the faculty of both the departments of Physics and Astrophysical Sciences. He cofounded and directs the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science. He has received the Dirac Medal and other prestigious awards for his work on the early universe and novel forms of matter. He is the author of The Second Kind of Impossible, and the coauthor of Endless Universe with Neil Turok, which describes the two competing ideas in cosmology to which he contributed. With his student, Dov Levine, Steinhardt first invented the theoretical concept of quasicrystals before they were synthesized in a laboratory. More than three decades later, with Luca Bindi, he guided the team that led to the discovery of three different natural quasicrystals in the Kamchatka Peninsula. In 2014, the International Mineralogical Association named a new mineral “steinhardtite” in his honor.

An amazing story, part top-notch scientific discovery, part detective story, part field adventure, Steinhardt’s remarkable book tells the story of his search for quasicrystals, a novel form of matter with geometric features that were thought impossible until then. The story is spiced up with hopes and failings and with Steinhardt’s encounters with legendary thinkers like Richard Feynman (his undergraduate research advisor) and Roger Penrose. There’s a voluble multitasking Russian cook and a Siberian cat named bucks guarding a campsite in the remote wilds of the Kamchatka Peninsula, and stories of Israelis and Italians secretly smuggling rare crystals out of Russia. What more could you want in a book?

This book is the true story of looking for a new form of matter. It reads better than most fiction books. I could not put it down! CAUTION: it is a little technical but if you do not understand some of the science, it's still a great read.

If you want to make inroads in the geophysical sciences, call a theoretical physicist.Paul Steinhardt’s trek of discovery—a tale of fortuosity, serendipity, and true grit—reads like a detective novel. Putting together matter that seemingly defies the laws of rotational symmetry is hard enough to do on purpose (synthetic construction). Expecting to find comparable material composed by natural forces stretches credulity. And also explains the author’s contrariness in defying convention to pursue such a “foolhardy” attempt to discover the first, authenticated, instance of a naturally occurring quasicrystal—an ordered but aperiodic structure.I enjoy reading about physics and cosmology so was hesitant to journey into a geophysical-geochemical foray into, basically, a materials science study of “impossible” material structures. The journey, however, proved worthwhile and taught me a great deal about the benefits of a recalcitrant mindset. If fortuosity and serendipity can be conjured by sheer willpower and obstinacy, Paul Steinhardt shows us how. His tenacity is borderline insanity! I cannot imagine another scientist managing to pull off such an impossible stunt. The author’s generosity to his colleagues is commendable as he documents a combined effort to discover a new form of matter on a comparatively desolate outpost precisely in the middle of nowhere. If you are looking strictly for an adventure, it will cost you: You will first have to follow the scientific trail that entails a good bit of necessary detail to set the stage. You will learn how the impossible becomes probable, perhaps likely, then mind-bogglingly irrefutable. Thoroughly understanding the search parameters will arm your mind to follow the ensuing trail of discovery.I appreciated the grounded exposition following the science, speculation, and intrigue with interest and increasing expectation as the author and his team ferret out the clues and battle the odds to reach their ultimate goal.

This is a really fascinating book about a new form of matter, quasicrystals, you've probably never heard of. It starts with an abstract concept and over thirty years, makes it real, and ultimately in an amazing field trip to the ends of the earth, finds it in nature. It really highlights the nature of real-life cross-discipline scientific collaboration. Highly recommended if you're interested in science and how it really works.

Yes - A surprise! The writing is just so engaging and a SURPRISE for writing on science subjects (see description on Amazon). Easy to read, brings subject to life -- best of this genre!
