I was looking for a book to help my daughter better understand her ADHD diagnosis and was also (per her therapist) trying to give her an outlet for her thoughts in the form of a journal-- this book did it all. My daughter is 8 years old and was diagnosed with ADHD when she was 5/6. After a number of various efforts to mitigate her symptoms, I started her on medication in 2014-- and promptly found relief for my struggling, bright little girl. I only recently put a name to the diagnosis for her-- before now I had described it as "turbo brain"-- but she is in a good place to understand and this book has helped put it all in perspective for her-- on her level. The book is in the format of a journal as told by 11-yr old Toby, with space for your own kid's thoughts and feelings. Also there are great little check lists to help guide the thought process and encourage your child to put his/her own thoughts down. My daughter refers back to that book all the time-- she not longer fights me taking her medication because she understands why she is taking it, she looks for a pillow now when she gets frustrated, she is not freaked out by her eye tick, but just shrugs and says- "eh, I have ADHD, sometimes ticks are a part of that." Toby was able to show her she is not odd or alone in the feelings and frustrations of trying to get through her daily routines and struggles. I highly recommend this book to any kid and his/her parent who are trying to find a way to work through the myriad, baffling, strangely magical quirks that make up our beautiful children with this diagnosis. Thank you, Tobias Stumpf and family.

Bought this book for our 11 year old son who has been really coming to terms with his ADHD and anxiety issues. He really enjoyed this book and actually used it to write down his thoughts and responses. As a parent, that is what I liked most. It was just a book to read but a literal journal to help them think more about who he is and why he is great. I'm not allowed to read his responses, and it hasn't gotten rid of any of our "issues" but it did help with making him feel like he isn't the only one out there.

My son loved this book and really connected with the author. It helped him to be more understanding of things out of his control, to be easier on himself and to develop strategies to help himself with things he knows he will struggle with. For example, after reading this book he suggested on his own that he should spend an hour outside playing after school and before homework. It transformed homework time from a struggle to a simple half hour. He needed the time to decompress. At the end of the day we really want him to learn how to manage and cope with his diagnosis, and this book has helped tremendously.

Thank you so much for writing this book. My 10 year old son was formally diagnosed last week and it has been emotional for al of us. I bought a few books for me and this one caught my attention. I am so glad I ordered it. After reading it myself, I handed it over to my son. His eyes immediately lit up and he started laughing and saying he loved it already (before reading it). I laid with him while he read the first chapter and he was smiling ear to ear. I went downstairs to take care of some things and he came and found me and asked if we could talk. He wanted to go back through all the chapters together and talk about his own experiences and ask questions. This book is a gift. Thank you.

This is an excellent resource for parents with a newly diagnosed ADHD child. It is a quick read for the parent, about 30 minutes, in order to determine if you want your child to be exposed to the information. I did. After reading, I felt so much less alone. ADHD can isolate, it's not something that we talk about with others because of not wanting our children judged. Because of this book, the world opens up a bit, and we find others who have the same struggles and realize that we are not alone. Thank you for this wonderful book. It is a lifesaver for me and will hopefully help my child to maintain confidence and self-esteem through the turbulent middle school years.

I just finished reading the book, Journal of an ADHD Kid and I found it facinating and entertaining. Learning about ADHD from the perspective of a middle school young man that has it, made the reading very authentic. Before reading the book I knew very little about ADHD, only that young people were often diagnosed with it and treated with medication. I think this book would be especially valuable for other young people with ADHD that have the same struggles that Tobias has experienced. Knowing that there are many others, just like Tobias, that have same frustrating issues with school, family and life in general, would help. The strategies Tobias has developed to deal with his ADHD will hopefully help others to manage their lives too.Parents and teachers will benefit from this book, it gives you a perspective of ADHD that you won't find in text books or when you Google it. The words Tobias writes come come from the heart and from his real-life experiences.I am a member of the same community in central Minnesota as Tobias. He has been a great customer of mine at the Farmers Market and I coached his traveling basketball team two years ago. He is a very intelligent, compassionate young man.Tobias was very brave to write this book. He realizes he may be opening himself to teasing or possibly bullying; but he wants to tell his story to help others. I think this book will accomplish just that. What a kid!

I read it with my 8 year old son who just got diagnosed with ADHD-Hyperactive. It helped both of us understand the disability a little more and help reassure my son that he's not the only one with this disability and that there's nothing to be ashamed of. The questions at the end of each chapter were helpful as well, even though he was very reluctant to answer them at first.

My daughter wants me to read this book to her every night - she could do it herself but she really loves it when I read it to her. I have to admit that every chapter we read, I'm amazed how accurate it is to her. It really helps for both of us to understand that all these behaviors she displays have a lot to do with her wiring and not her just trying to be difficult.

I have been a fan of the works of Matthew Kelly since I first read one of his books late in 2015. Since that time, I have read a book by him a total of 18 times. I have been bouncing around his different titles randomly pickling what to read next. This book is his most recent publication, at the time of writing this review. This book has a densely packed 15 chapters:1. Life Is A Puzzle2. Your Happiness Project3. The False Promises And Lies Of This World4. I've Been Lying To Myself5. So Many Lies About Christianity6. The Biggest Lie7. Prove It!8. One Beautiful Truth9. The World Needs Changing10. It's Been Done Before11. History Is Presenting Christianity With A New Opportunity12. Everyday Miracles13. Live An Intriguing Life14. Our Dirty Little Secret15. Now Is Your Time! After the last book I reviewed by Matthew Kelly a reader reached out to me and asked if Kelly was just a Catholic version of Max Lucado. I thought about that for a while, when I was involved with non-denomination campus ministries I read a lot of Lucado. Eventually I stopped because it all felt the same. It came to feel like Lucado just continued to present variations on a theme without having much real new content. And I feel the same way about Mark Batterson. But with Matthew Kelly I have not felt that at all yet. Yes Kelly writes with a great deal of passion, and he does sometimes use the same illustrations. And his catch phrase: 'Becoming the best version of yourself' appears often in his writings. But even with all of that with each new book by Kelly that I read I have a renewed interest in reading more of his works. Every time I finish one I go and pick one I have not read and add it to my to be read pile.In this book Kelly states:"Transforming people one at a time is at the heart of God's plan for the world. Itis also essential to developing dynamic marriages, loving families, vibrant Christian communities, thriving businesses and economies, and extraordinary schools and nations. If you get the man right (or the woman, of course), you get the world right.""The thing is, our deep yearning isn't for momentary pleasures; it is for lastinghappiness in a changing world. The world is always changing; we cannot control every situation. Situational happiness is easy. It is easy to be happy lying on an exotic tropical beach all day for a week. But so much of this happiness is dependent on the situation. What we are really hungry for is a happiness that is independent of the situation."Matthew also shares with us form his personal experience. He states:"Through my own quest for happiness, there are a few things Ihave learned: Happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. Getting what I want doesn't make me happy. Focusing on myself almost never leads to happiness. I am never happy when I pretend to be someone I am not. Too much of the happiness I experience is dependent on unsustainable circumstances or situations. The more I help others in their quest for lasting happiness, the happier I seem to be. Lying never makes me happy. Happiness is always found by embracing the present moment. It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time. Anything that helps me become a-better-version-of-myself makes me happy, even if it is difficult or painful. Happiness is contagious."And he shows us that the way we find true happiness is by pursuing answers to four questions."Who am I?What am I here for? What matters most? What matters least?"He also shares with us that:"It is this fact-that we lie to ourselves-that is of particular importancehere. Humanity's ability to deceive itself knows no limits."Or"Whenever and wherever Christians have taken the idea that holiness is possible seriously, Christianity has thrived. Whenever and wherever the biggest lie in the history of Christianity has prevailed and everyday holiness has been set aside, Christianity has fumbled along clumsily with limited impact or become stagnant.""I don't like alarm clocks. Just the name disturbs me. Who wants to start the day alarmed? But when you check into a hotel, they often ask you if you would like a wakeup call. I like that. We all need a wakeup call from time to time. I needed one last year. Maybe you need one right now. It is just so easy to fall into the mode of sleepwalking through life."I hope that those few quotes will help you appreciate some of the message that is in this wonderful book. Of all the books I have read by Kelly this is the best so far. I highly recommend it.

I am involved in Christian and Catholic apologetics. I write and read a lot. Matthew Kelly's The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity" was given out to parishioners at the two parishes our family attends. The book is lauded as a great tool of evangelism. I read it. But I found it very shallow and insipid in its thinking. Catholics can do much better than read this if they want to be better prepared to engage the culture, witness for Christ, and better their lives.Consider these few points.(1) The Biggest Lie... unlike most Catholic texts this book has no citations, outside references, footnotes, nor is there a bibliography. Ex. He quotes Keats, but no citation. Only one Scripture is cited: 1 Thes. 4:3. Thus, contrary to what I was told by a priest, there is no clear presentation of the Gospel in this book. But rather a feel-good, nearly post-modern version of the Gospel IS suggested. (See No. 3 below.)(2) In rebutting the historic lies about Christianity, The Biggest Lie... provides few if any facts that can be tracked down and checked out. But Kelly offers plenty of opinion. Ex. "#1 Jesus Didn't Exist" (p 22), Kelly provides not one piece of evidence that Jesus did exist. But he provides 7 claims that Christ didn't, and offers 6 of his own unsubstantiated opinions, demeaning his detractors by calling them "disingenuous" or liars. Matthew, name calling is not evidence.(3) If there's a practical theme to the book it's to create Holy Moments by being kind to others. This is where 1 Thes. 4:3 comes in, "...be holy." Good starting point, but Kelly interprets this, which by other names is a repeat of past secular social fads a.k.a. "random acts of kindness" and "pay it forward" which the secular culture practices to a great extent. Kelly seems to think such Holy Moments are unique to Christians and the world will sit up and take notice. He's wrong. He's also wrong the holiness is arrived at by being kind to others...although being kind is a good thing. Further, he provides no advice on how to use Holy Moments to confront cultural issues like abortion, sexualization, gender politics or the ever-present sex scandal in the Church. He ignores these issues totally. Thus, the book is very shallow.(4) He spends time talking about giving 100% of our lives to Christ, but the thinking here is nothing more than a bottle of bromides. Platitudes with no practical interpretation. EX: If I give my 100% to Christ how do I have anything left for my wife, job, or kids? Now there's a clear answer to that, in that we are Christ in our interaction with our wife, job and kids...but Kelly doesn't say that. He just piles on the adages.(5) On pages 94-95 he writes of the power that ONE individual has to change the world and gives as an example: "Had another thousand or ten thousand joined" the resistance against Hitler "they would have changed the course of history." Think about that logic. ONE person can change Hitler's attack on humanity, but 1,000 or 10,000 more are needed. What happened to the "one person" business? In claiming this over simplification Kelly appears ignorant of the tens of MILLIONS that died to stop Hitler and the Axis powers over a period of years. The logic is over simplified, generalized, and baffling.(6) On pages 109-112 Kelly gives one-line bios to over 30 of the greatest achieving people to grace humanity, from Bill Gates to Grandma Moses, listing the great things they did and the age when they did them...and he points out that these special people were "called of God". Then he follows this up by reminding the reader (in big type) "you and I—are capable of incredible things." Why does he say we don't do such things? He does not remind the reader that he said that the former were called of God, or that they worked hard all their lives and prepared for their great opportunities. No, he says it's because we're busy with the "hustle and bustle of life" as if the famous folks weren't busy with such things. "Or we think we are not among the special people and we are not capable of great things." Duh! Well, most of us are not "called of God" in a special way like Joan of Arc, nor are we as talented or as disciplined as Jack Nicklaus, or driven like Paul McCartney for fame, etc. But never mind that logic. Kelly says, "We are wrong. We are capable of great things." And then by the force of his words he reminds us that Holy Moments (Random Acts of Kindness) are equivalent to the works of Mozart and Michelangelo. One thing for sure, Matthew Kelly will never be lauded for his literature or remembered for his sharp mind.(7) In many places the proofs he provides to support his opinion are simply restatements of his position with more emphatic words. On pages 59-60 he goes on a rant about the need of Christian unity to save the Church and the world. He never gives a tactical or strategic plan for bringing about such unity other than his Holy Moments motif. And then to prove his point he writes: "And hear me when I say this: The future of Christianity around the world depends on this unity. It's no longer just a nice idea...." etc. Thus, in numerous places Kelly's best evidence in support of his opinion is the sight of his own words in print... or the sound of his voice on his videos. What more do we need? There are a number of other logical problems with this book. In short, if Catholics read this they will learn that simply repeating ideological chants ("But Matthew Kelly said...") and paying it forward with random acts of kindness will unite the church, dispense with evil, and change the culture. In the meantime, it would be great if Kelly would steer clear of the bromides and write a practical book on confronting evil.

We all struggle with being the best version of our selves, we allow ourselves to put off what we should be doing, this book give some direction on how to get started.

I started reading this, then put it down when life got busy. I was hit with a minor illness that really had me feeling low. Looking for something to read, I grabbed this book again. I was just coming into the chapter of Transformation and I was hit....this is exactly what I need. I need to open myself to God and find out why I am here, and what is my purpose. I am so ready to make more Holy Moments! I am inspired!

It was an easy read and made you think about really being catholic. I have been catholic all my life but this re-energized me about my faith

Wow, what a simple but necessary solution to the problems of our time which is actually timeless. Learn how live the life you were meant to live as only each of us can do!

Extremely simple concept, don't complicate it. Jesus used a child as the model for us. Quick and easy to read.

MaybeI like the approach but like most Christians that write as an expert the topic of evil being involved is taboo. Jesus recognizes Satan in the desert and several ties when mentioning fires of hell. So you may bring the real Christians around but embedded evil will continue to block as much as they can. Been attending church for 75 plus years and am still trying to identify what a sin is other than those listed in the 10 commandments. Rest are “ God said to ? Or man decided another rule would bring them around. So essentially he is right we are more holy than organized religion would have us believe. I am tired of hearing how sinful we are as the writer 9 implies. Good not great show.

Review

“Sparkling and informative.”—Meghan Cox Gurdon, Wall Street Journal (Holiday Gift Book selection)“A great addition to the collection of anyone who is, to some degree, passionate about color.”—Angelica Frey, Hyperallergic“An entertaining philosophical tract that searches for the meaning of color . . . A personal and opinionated book, which engages the reader and stimulates an internal discussion . . . A gift book, beautifully produced with fine illustrations . . .  A book to be kept on your night table to be read episodically.”—Ana Daniel, East Hampton Star“Masterful . . . Kastan demonstrates the weight of color through beautiful, persuasive prose while weaving through multifarious concepts.”—Stephanie Osmanski, Dan’s Papers (Long Island)“Remarkably beautiful, original, and engaging . . . A stunningly attractive object, replete with brilliant illustrations that bring to life the insightful, lyrical, and perceptive commentary . . . An enthralling read.”—Gina Barreca, Psychology Today“A gorgeously illustrated in-depth exploration of color on all of its symbolic, visual, literary, political, historic, and scientific registers . . . conversational, personal, witty in tone . . . an optimistic and essential reminder of the ever-shifting meanings and functions of color.”—Stefanie Sobelle, Los Angeles Review of Books“In discussions ranging from Homer’s ‘wine-dark sea’ to the exact red of the Hungarian flag, the authors make a convincing case that ‘color inevitably exceeds language.’ In this readable, carefully written, and handsomely illustrated book, colors are discussed individually. Highly recommended for all readers.”—R. M. Davis, Choice“Dense with references, the chapters move rapidly through incidents and ideas. . . . Kastan and Farthing are fascinated by the way we make colour mean things in spite of itself, by the possibilities it provides in its expressive ambiguities and the consequences of the material histories that go along with it.”—Ruth Jones, Literary Review of CanadaWinner of the Outstanding Academic Title for 2018 award sponsored by Choice“Here is a subtle and imaginative insight into the slippery phenomenon we call colour – and how variously we perceive and emblemise it: a wise and fascinating study.”—Colin Thubron"Like the best works of cultural criticism, On Color changes how we see the world. I mean that quite literally.  After reading this brilliant book, the mundane appears sharper, richer, and more meaningful."—James Shapiro, author of 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare“This lively, erudite, and far-reaching introduction to the poetics of color combines anecdotal art history with cultural and literary studies to illustrate a fundamental truth: that color is relational as well as subjective. This entertaining and humane book effortlessly deepens our engagement with the visual world.”—David Salle“On Color is a deliciously readable, gloriously illumined work of meditation and exploration, written in high resolution.”—Jay Parini, author of The Last Station and Empire of Self: A Life of Gore Vidal

What a beautiful and fascinating book! Gorgeous to look at, and fun to read. My favorite chapter was Orange -- who knew there was no name for the color before the introduction of the fruit?

There's so much knowledge in this book, worn so gracefully. I learned something new (and usually something astonishing) on every page, but the book never feels didactic or ponderous. It's brilliantly and invitingly written, and never strays far from the sheer joy of *seeing* color (the gorgeous images don't hurt). I came away from this book feeling like I'd been listening in on Farthing's and Kastan's conversations; it's hard to imagine better guides to the nature and culture of color.

Kastan and Farthing’s On Color manages to be both provocative and playful, able to move from Bertrand Russell to “The Dress” of internet fame with intellectual dexterity and wit. And the book is not only a great read: the edition from Yale is beautifully designed, presenting its own feast of color from the dust jacket to the pastedowns and photos within.

Extremely readable and very interesting! Each chapter explores a different color and highlights something unknown about the subject. I found the chapter on Violet to be my favorite.

Beautiful, brilliant, and a joy to read. Perfect for anyone who loves design, art, history, language, and great writing. You'll get smarter and the world's colors will get a little richer.

The last thing I expected was to laugh out loud several times while reading David Kastan's latest book, “On Color.” It was pure pleasure: smart, witty and illuminating. When I’m getting dressed in the morning I keep hearing Coco Chanel...,‘When I find a color darker than black, I’ll wear it.” At first, after reading the chapter on orange, I was sure it was my new favorite color, but then I got to blue and he made me rush to watch/ listen to Jarman’s ‘Blue." I finally settled on black being closest to my heart after the quote, “It is the dress of pure possibility. It allows everyone to imagine that social gaps can be narrowed and perhaps, if only for a moment, closed.”It is as if Mr. Kastan culled the literary, film and art world for us. I imagine it as a museum that he curated and where I would want to spend hours and hours! I loved every quote, painting, photograph, and anecdote. It felt like the book was cleverly arranged in the same way he described experiencing color, layer upon layer and tapping all our senses.

I have many books on color and each one offers good information. This book takes it a step further and comments on culture and how the names of colors have come about in language. There is much more. Makes for an interesting read and muse. Highly recommend.

I thought this would be a good book, and it is. But it's a little more broad than Kassia St Clair's 2016 the Secret Life of Colors. I really preferred St Clair's book. If you're purchasing for a designer or artist friend, get St Clair's book. This book would be best for someone with a literary bent.

The Complete Peanuts Volume 4: 1957-1958, by Charles M. Schulz

Amazon.com Review

In the fourth volume in Fantagraphics Books' Complete Peanuts series, Snoopy continues to develop as a character, and the worm--Linus--turns against his fussbudget sister, Lucy. Sure, she's still a fierce intimidator of her little brother and Charlie Brown, but he's learned to strike back with a deft pair of pliers, a huge sand castle or snow dinosaur, or merely the will to walk up and change the channel. Lucy also continues her pursuit of the oblivious musician, Schroeder (contrary to the advice of Dear Agnes). Snoopy continues his impersonations (vulture, penguin, etc.), plays baseball and football, angsts over being called "fuzzy-face or "dime a dozen," and dances gleefully on Schroeder's piano. Charlie Brown, of course, has very little glee, especially when he has to manage a dysfunctional baseball team that only wins if he's sick or when the championship is riding on his catching a simple pop fly. But at least he has his pencil pal. Charles M. Schulz by this time was comfortably in his routine of multi-day stories, and there's a bit of foreshadowing when Schroeder, wildly inventing names of imaginary pianists, comes up with "Joseph Schlabotnik," which would later become the name of CB's baseball hero. The volume has an introduction by author Jonathan Franzen and a Sunday strip from May 3, 1953, which was discovered after the 1953-54 volume was printed. --David Horiuchi

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In this fourth volume of Fantagraphics' wildly successful chronological reprinting of Peanuts, the comic strip begins to slide into its most popular form. In these pages, Snoopy is becoming most Snoopy-like, with a wondrously funny vulture sequence; Charlie Brown is hapless and often hopeless while his war with Lucy moves into high gear, and of course Pig-Pen, Patty, and Schroeder are all kicking around. Schulz evolved his characters from week to week, letting their idiosyncratic musings, pratfalls and jokes accumulate. It's possible to flip back a few dozen pages and understand Charlie Brown's emotional evolution. The humanity of both the characters and their creator is the subject of Jonathan Franzen's insightful introduction—certainly the best yet published in the series. Deftly putting to rest the rather trendy theory that Schulz's inner torment gave vent to the psychological dramas in Peanuts, Franzen convincingly makes the case that Schulz was able to accomplish what he did because of a surfeit of love and family. After one has read these pages, full of well-rounded, humane characters, Franzen's theory seems just about right: to create characters so essential and so loveable, Schulz could only have emerged from just such a milieu. One of my Christmas presents, and I'm definitely getting more. The 1967-1968 set was quite familiar to me, but 1969-1970 wasn't. Clearly, the first two years were well represented in the Treasuries I used to get from my library.Definitely buying more, as I only have 1950-1952.One of my favorite strips ever.

I just received this set yesterday and it is just as sturdy as the others. I can't believe my collection is almost complete. This is a great collection for all fans of the strip and I, for one, am proud to own them. Beautifully done as always. Now for the good part. Fans of the collection have been curious as to what is going to happen with the final volume. Will it have a case or not? A few months ago I contacted the publishers about this and was told that there will indeed be a 26th volume and final box set next year. However, there has been no official word yet from the publishers so this morning I contacted again concerning the same matter and was told once again that there will be a 26th volume. This time I was given a bit more info as well. Here was there response:(Cut and pasted)Due to collector demands we're publishing a 26th volume of material yet to be determined and there will be a boxed set for 25 & 26 at the end of 2016.Our pr dept. gave me this bit of information that will be apart of promotion starting next year. "Complete Peanuts fans: although the strip has been collected, we have one more volume up our sleeve for next fall, collecting a treasure trove of Schulz rarities, from his initial Peanuts pitch packet, to several comic book stories, advertising art, two major, never-before published interviews, and many other surprises!"

This Peanuts collection, 1963-1964, stands out. The strip suffered from overexposure beginning about ten years later. It was probably on nearly every bulletin board in every grade school in the country. In that time, it was mainly the very sentimentalized excerpts featuring a sweet saccharine world, and it is still close to that today. Too bad, as it leaves out the sharper and wittier world of the characters. The 1964 Sunday proclaims, "Happiness is winning an argument with your sister," so when Lucy argues that Linus will get great satisfaction from kicking apart a snow-Lucy he had made, he says "On the contrary! That would be crude. I'm just going to stand here and watch it slowly melt away!" In other places, Lucy makes her patented temper humorous and even wise when she claims,"There's nothing like a little physical pain to take your mind off your emotional problems." Sunday strips then were more widely read, so when Charley Brown lamented twice in one Sunday, "There's a dreariness in the air that depresses me," many people laughed but nodded their heads. But perhaps Sally displays the most existential angst when after crying out loud on a Sunday, she explains, "I was jumping rope....Everything was all right...when...Suddenly it all felt so futile!" On a side note, I find that reading just a couple pages a day works best with strip reprints. They were intended by their creators to be read a little at a time. In any case, this volume of Fantagraphics' great series is a special, truthful one.

Well, a little disappointed as I thought this was the FINAL volume in the series, but then I read the word "penultimate" on the bookjacket and after a little research discovered there will one more book in the series (Vol. 26) that collects rarities, demo strips and other non-strip related Peanuts art. That being said, it's a little bittersweet to have completed the entire strip in collection -- minus one missing strip from 1957 I believe that was not in the archive and no one has been able to find a copy (to the best of my knowledge - the publisher of this series said they would be publish it in a future volume if it was ever found). But this is still a fitting end (almost). My only quibble with this release concerns the final Sunday panel that was published 9 hours after Schulz's passing. In the original color strip, there are (I assume) digitally imposed images of past scenes in the blank space above Snoopy's (read: Schulz's) final typed words. I know this because I saved the strip from my copy of that Sunday paper. I also still get misty-eyed and the lump forms in my throat when I read that final strip and those words in bold typeface: "Dear Friends...Truth be told, I bawled like a baby after reading it initially over 16 years ago, especially after learning Schulz had died the night before. In fact, Charles Schulz is one of the three "celebrity" deaths I have ever cried over as if I lost a member of my own family. Fred Rogers and Dick Clark are the other two. Perhaps there was some subconscious "avuncular" association I had with these 3 individuals - like they were the favorite old uncles who were nonthreatening and wise in their own ways. Mr. Rogers was, of course, a major part of my early childhood along with Sesame Street and the Electric Company (even though admittedly some of his stuff seems pretty sappy looking back with adult hindsight but I still think he genuinely cared about children and their feelings), and Dick Clark helped to inform me of rock and popular music as I came of musical age in the late 70's/early 80's via American Bandstand, and countless Rockin' New Year Eves. I am of the firm belief that one establishes his/her musical tastes during their tween years and I happened to enter that during the Punk/New Wave explosion (and I still like the music from that era - not the crap it mutated into by 1985 - by then I was well on my way to what would soon be called alternative/college radio music). However, throughout my childhood and into my adult life, the one constant by was Charles Schulz and Peanuts, either via the daily comic strip or the TV specials (which still continue to air on Broadcast Television), the books, the greeting cards, the stuffed Snoopys, the Christmas ornaments, even the Met Life commercials. So thanks to Fantagraphics and the Schulz family for archiving and allowing this collection to be made available to the public. I look forward to purchasing the FINAL volume in October and then my collection will be more or less complete!

I buy Strokes every year. It is very inspirational and I can hardly wait for the next one comingn out. Love the artists commentaries.

This artist continues to buy this excellent series about drawing techniques the the artist that do them.

So happy when I received the book

The Strokes of Genius books are always first-rate. I have long-loved this series that has been around since 2007. The books are oversized and the reproduction quality excellent. The art represented is the result of an annual international competition. The winners are selected from many entries (pencil, colored pencil, pastel, charcoal, etc) and are beautifully rendered in a variety of techniques, styles and subject matter. Each artist writes a caption about their drawing. These insights about the artist's process are tips you won't find anywhere else. I use these books as a teaching tool in my art classes. Strokes 9 is a beautiful book, however I preferred the layout and reproduction quality of its predecessor Strokes of Genius 8. What do some of you junkies of this series think??

I came across this book on some blog recently and wanted to purchase it. Our family is about to move onto a farm and I thought it would be a good book to help us learn about all the things we don't know yet. The illustrations and short but detailed descriptions are wonderful. My 10 yr old son and 11 yr old daughter have enjoyed this as much as me. Even my husband likes it. It's quickly become a resource book in our home. A favorite and one I know will be enjoyed for years to come.

This is a fantastic book. We are farmers and are very impressed with the content. Farm books tend to be typically annoying to us. You know...steers are labeled as cows and tractors with loader buckets are labeled as diggers. Well, not this book. The author did an amazing job of keeping this book accurate. My 8 year old loves it. It covers a wide variety of ag related topics and does so in an easy to comprehend and entertaining manner. I plan to purchase more copies of this book for gifts. I also bought 2 more books by this author due to my satisfaction with this edition.

I saw this book reviewed on a blog and instantly fell in love with the "comb styles" page featured. So I wanted to take a better look at the book to see if it was something that could be gifted this coming holiday season and was not disappointed. The illustrations were well done and the whole book was full of color. The biggest surprise was how my autistic 5-year-old son LOVED it! We laid in bed for an hour talking about the different parts of a farm, the plants and the animals. We did some counting, explored how a plant has roots and where chicken nuggets come from. I don't have coffee table books but this might make its way there to be enjoyed by the whole family.

We bought her other book Nature Anatomy Book first and fell in love. Naturally this purchase was coming. My children love anything that has to do with the outdoors and my youngest loves farm! THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! Just like the other one it is full of beautiful illustrations on every single page. There are notes on everything! Knowing it was going to be as good as the last I did not buy this for the information. These books stay on my bookshelf because they are so wonderful but my kids ask for them regularly. My youngest is three and he will look at it for much longer than any other book that will hold his attention. I will sit and look at all the details in her drawings for fun. Don't get me wrong the information is great as well, everything page is full of information that explains the basics of farm life and even things I did not know whatsoever. Granted I never lived on a farm. You cannot go wrong with this book

We love it!

Awesome book. We got this for my 3 yo son for Christmas, in addition to a toy barn and farm animals. This book's illustrations are great! I am sure I'm going to enjoy this book more than him but it will be nice to teach him about things as well. Beautifully laid out and a nice book to just sit and enjoy looking through. Definitely recommend. I don't generally leave too many reviews but felt compelled with this one. Will have to check out the author's other works.

I LOVE THIS!! Bought it for a friend who wants to own a farm and oh my goodness is it a cute gift. It has great drawings and recipes and it's still a legitimate educational manual just way cuter. Really amazing gift if you have gardners/farmers in your life.

When children are wanting so badly to learn about farm life and animals and actually ask you to read this book to them every day, why would one refuse? It was filled with information and various farm landscapes, barn types, weather vanes, types of animals on farms from sheep to chickens to rabbits, various flowers you might find on a farm, things like insects you might find there, and so many other things. My sons loved it. I did not like this as much as Nature Anatomy though.

Julia Rothman had the guts to go ask some of these farmers how things work, which is more nerve than I ever had, and I grew up on a farm. It was a blast from the past to see these illustrations, and I wish my Dad were still alive so I could give him a copy of this book. We lived in a farm house with a humongous gable-roofed barn, and worked constantly with the mowers and balers and dump-rakes shown in this book. The cows were my father's pets; he had samples of most of the breeds described within. And he could remember plowing with horses on HIS father's farm, just up the road. I write, and I am keeping this book as a reference for my Vermont and St.Lawrence Valley farm characters. I also lent it to a well-known children's illustrator, who then went out and bought a copy of her own. So it's an artist's reference, too.

This was one of my summer read-aloud books last year. My boys are elementary-age and they both loved this story. I swapped out a few savory phrases for less-offensive ones (just my personal opinion and preference as to what I intentionally expose my kids to). I loved the theme of perseverance in spite of some pretty serious hardship, as well as that there is more than one way to measure intelligence. The boy in this story was not academically inclined, but that did not stop him from being successful.

I bought my first copy of this book at a garage sale. I enjoyed it so much that I bought a copy for each of my elementary students. The lessons this book teaches include: being yourself, perseverance, kindness, acceptance of others, and honesty. I highly recommend this book. I plan to purchase more books by this author.

My grandson was reading this book for his book club and it sounded interesting so I purchased it. It was a delightful story about a boy who was a bit slow and how he accomplished a great fete. A great story for young people. The book also shows how a group of misfits work together and get the turkeys to walk a very long way with great results. It is based loosely on actual events of walking turkeys to get them to market. Highly recommended for the young and the young at heart.

Quick easy read, GREAT story. I would recommend for a youth, or adult book club to read. We had some good discussions with this book. This book will keep a permanent place in our library.

This book is heartwarming and funny. I recommend this book to people all the time and they all come back saying they loved it. Life lesson - Your start in life does not have to dictate your future. It is up to you to make the change and follow your dreams.

This is a great story! It's a really easy read that I will be doing as a read aloud with our 4 kids! This is the first of this author that I have read, but I will definitely check out some others!

The Great Turkey Walk is an interesting realistic fiction book that takes you through the mid-Missouri area all the way to Colorado. It has real life relationship issues that pre-teens and teens can relate to. It deals with social issues of the time period in an intriguing way. Overall, I love this book by Kathleen Karr! Sequals please, Ms. Karr!

I read this book for school. Funny and uplifting, this book deserves a five-star review. You'll surely love the whole book about independent 15-year-old Simon Green and his memorable friends.

The Phantom Public (Library of Conservative Thought), by Walter Lippmann

Review

"Lippmann's clear exposition of the simple truths of democratic politics offers an excellent example of the value of carefully fashioned political theory to the undestanding and practice of governing. . . [The Phantom Public] serves as a much needed caution to public officials that effective leadership cannot be based on the swirling currents of public feeling." —Robert Heineman, The University Bookman

Very interesting read. Great insight and observations to consider when making political judgments. Lippman committed his life to political observer. Many questions in the book allow the reader to formulate their own opinion.

The book arrived on time and in excellent condition. This is one of series of reprints of books long out of print. I am grateful for that.

Unfortunately this text is not nearly as popular as Lippmann's precursor work "Public Opinion". It's a classic of the elite nihilistic attitude towards the masses, astoundingly pessimistic, Lippmann puts into language suited for the very common person a total denunciation of that person's abilities. His logic is not very strong though on many occasions, such as when he goes on about how we are expected to make decisions about such and such one day and such other trivial matter the next... he oversimplifies to draw his sought after conclusions. One should read this though to get a good grasp of how the elite members of government and media learned to treat the public.

Lippmann is usually taken to be a pessimist about democracy. Those who see him this way (and perhaps that would include Lippman himself) fail to consider that Lippmann's diagnosis of the failed citizen and his convincing argument that the citizen simply lacks the inclination and capacity for genuine democratic participation is most convincing only if people consider big, centralized and increasingly intrusive government as an inevitability. It isn't. Further, those who consider it an inevitability generally argue that it is so because it is a necessity. Society, they argue, has become so complex and intertwined and thus delicate that decision making must by necessity be in the hands of those who can recognize and handle its complexity. In other words, experts. This is the view that justifies dictatorships of the proletariat, a talented tenth and bureaucracy. Further, starting from the pretense that people are bad decision makers, those who actually govern the society need to be isolated from the democratic process. If society is to be managed, it must be managed without having to answer to all the fools clamouring for the irrational through their legislative representatives. The idea things are so complex that ordinary men can't really govern reminds me of the Hobbesian notion that people are inherently corrupt and driven to abuse power for their own unseemly purposes and thus we need to concentrate power in the hands of a monarch. In other words: all people are corrupt, so let's give total power to a person. The real folly is not that the ordinary citizen is too ill informed to manage society; the real folly is that people are capable of being well informed enough to manage much more than their own lives. Just as the average citizen can't really vote rationally on complex matters involving untold numbers of people and circumstances, so the planner cannot really understand, much less actually know, all of the information needed for a truly informed decision. In other words, the more complex a society becomes, the more simple and limited its government must become. People are not rendered incapable of governing; they just need to have their input limited to their immediate set of circumstances. Here, their decisions won't always yield the results anticipated, but they are certainly in a better position to know why. Thus, the idea that Lippmann's view of the democratic citizen to effectively manage the United States is depressing only if you think that it can't manage itself. It can. It's called a free market. As for the people's voice in government, they remain perfectly capable of directing state and local governments towards desirable ends. What Lippmann really proves it that the anti-Federalists were right. Local government governs best."Average" people can govern the children's schools, the local police - but, the real point evaded by both Lippmann and his critics is that people can govern their own lives quiet well and experts know infinitely less about the consequences of policy on an individual's life than the individual does.In other words, Lippmann's critics suffer the same fatal conceits they accuse Lippmann of having: an elitist presumption of knowing what's best for people they don't even know and a refusal to entertain letting people run their own lives for fear that the results would actually be good and thus give visible evidence of the superiority of free markets and human liberty and forever condemn statism to the ashheap of history.
