A well written and beautifully written book. My son's school recommended it for a summer reading project. He likes the book a lot and I love it, too. We discussed how Adeline's "hidden" character and fortitude are inspirational. Her strength gave her the ability to continually hope. It is hard to read at times and I remember physically wincing. Parts of the author's memoir reminded me of a book I read, Under The Same Sky by Joseph Kim. Hope and desire for a life with love are strong, common threads. This book helped my early teen son understand the human need for love outside of his need, as well as how powerful the need for love is. I did not want to put this book down, so I read it rather quickly. My son also did not want to put it down. We both are inspired by Adeline's wisdom and survival skills. Her acceptance of her "position" pushed her hard toward high academic achievement, as a way to be loved and accepted by her dad. She is a hero for not quitting, for not accepting defeat no matter how bleak things were. Thankfully she had "everyday heroes" in her life. She chose their support and help--for that she was brave. It is honorable that she used her intelligence, talents, and painful childhood to motivate herself for a better life that led her into an occupation that serves others. Her writing talent is wonderful to experience. My son and I learned about the difference between the written Chinese language and the spoken ones. Her explanations and examples of how the written language is expressed in pictures made it much less intimidating to learn for me. She presented it in such a way that I easily learned words and phrases from her book. This memoir is also full of historical facts. The author takes readers on a journey to places and situations as though we were actually there. The book made me think and for that I am grateful.

Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of Unwanted DaughterChinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, tells her childhood story of being a young, Chinese girl living in an unvenial household. Her family was so abusive and unfair, you can hardly believe her story was a true story. Like the fairytale Cinderella, Adeline has an abusive stepmother, who she calls Niang, who is favored among many for her Chinese and French heritage and has a passionate hatred towards Adeline. Her own father, “treats her like garbage” and even forgets Adeline’s name. Adeline watches the rest of her siblings get treated generously, while she is left in the shadows. However, she hides her true heart and never speaks of the abusive home life to her fellow peers. Instead she rises from the ashes and is the top of her class in school. Knowing that one day, she will be able to make someone out of the beaten and bruised girl she is.Personally, what I enjoyed about the book was how the author was able to produce strong emotions towards characters from the readers. Whilst reading her story, I felt a burning hatred towards the people who would treated Adeline wrong. Or in other situations, I’d find myself beaming when Adeline triumphs. Her story was inspiring to read, and she is a strong young woman, who wanted to make a life out of herself, even though she is living in the 1940s. I would also recommend the book if you are wanting to learn more about the Chinese culture. Throughout the story, she uses Chinese dialects, talks about the ceremonies they go to, and the Communist government that surrounds her.

A very tragic but powerful story. I bought this book because I'm a speaker and my signature talk is on the Cinderella fairy tale. I wanted to read this book as a resource for my talk and my two Cinderella books at Amazon. This is an amazing book. Your heart goes out to her, especially when her poor little duck dies and she is so rejected and unloved by her stepmother, and even her father and siblings. It ends on a positive note. Adversity often is the springboard for our greatness to come forth. Inspiring read.

It is a nice book to read. I bought this book for my daughter for her AR reading. My daughter heard about this book from her friend and she decided to read it too. My daughter started talking about the story and characters in the book. This got me start reading it as well. There were some historical facts and interesting Chinese traditions in the book. This book sparked a lot of conversation between us. The result of reading this book, my daughter and I did some research about foot binding and we learnt more about that. It is interesting book, although it is predictable at times but it is enjoyable enough. My daughter said her other friend borrowed the book to read as well.

Poignant memoir of a woman growing up in WWII era transitional China. With a cruel and narcissistic Stepmother and an almost equally cruel, clueless and uncaring father she was destined to be a hapless victim. By hard work, persistence, some timely encouragement from other family members and kindly nuns she turned despair into triumph. A close look into traditional Chinese culture and family values makes this book educational as well as touching. Read it and learn what can be overcome and survived by determination and willpower!

My son had to read this book for school and loved it so much he asked me to read it, too. It's an easy read - I finished it in one day - and enjoyed discussing it with him. It's heartbreaking but a great look at other cultures and upbringings.

Review

"Confession of a Serial Killer stands out as the first [book] that takes the form of a collaboration with the serial killer. Unlike many crime books, it does not merely speculate about a predator's deranged thoughts and schemes but rather plunges the reader into them, revealing in remarkable detail how a well-known serial killer at the end of his life sees himself."--Rachel Shteir "The New York Times Magazine"For readers interested in the workings of the mind, psychology, true crime, and criminal justice, this is a unique work, in which the author is a conduit to the thinking process, rather than the descriptor of events."--Rachel Shteir "Library Journal""Ramsland says her purpose [in writing the book] was to give criminologists, forensic psychologists and others some first-hand insights into a serial killer's mind, by relating the stories he tells, and how he tells them."--Rachel Shteir "Wichita Eagle""In Confession of a Serial Killer, Dr. Katherine Ramsland got Dennis Rader to reveal the dark fantasies that led him to murder."--Rachel Shteir "Rolling Stone"

“Dr. Ramsland offers us insights into the mind of a serial killer rarely seen in criminological literature. I could not put this book down. I am absolutely fascinated by her ability to forge a relationship with BTK that allowed him to share the innermost secrets of his Dark Side. This is a must-read book for anyone wanting to understand the fantasies, behaviors, and mind-set of one of the most notorious serial sexual predators of our time.” (Eric W. Hickey, PhD, author of Serial Murderers and Their Victims)“Based on her extensive, years-long communications with Dennis Rader, Katherine Ramsland’s Confession of a Serial Killer not only presents a definitive portrait of one of our country’s most infamous modern criminals but provides a uniquely illuminating look into the workings of the psychopathic mind. By combining Rader’s autobiographical writings with her own expert commentary, Ramsland guides us through that terrifying labyrinth, shedding brilliant light on every shadowy corner along the way.” (Harold Schechter, author of The Serial Killer Files)“Katherine Ramsland has crafted a one-of-a-kind book, allowing the reader to journey directly into the mind of BTK, a.k.a. Dennis Rader, a serial killer who eluded authorities for over thirty years. I could ramble on effusively about what she has accomplished through her dialogue with Rader and her review of tons of prime source material, but I won’t. Just know this: It’s a hell of a book. Buy it. Read it. It may keep you up at night, but you won’t regret it.” (Gregg McCrary, former FBI profiler)“I wish I knew then what I know now. Katherine Ramsland has peeled back the layers of this serial killer. Her work not only benefits the families of the victims but also will be cathartic for our community as a whole to understand how evil exists.” (Nola Tedesco Foulston, Esq., former district attorney for Sedgwick County, Kansas)

When it comes to books about serial killers and bizarre true crimes, I have read more than my fair share. I have read many theories on how a person develops into a serial killer, always looking for further understanding, or some sort of explanation that I hadn't heard before. I can honestly say that Katherine Ramsland's book: "Confession of a Serial Killer: The Untold Story of Dennis Rader- The BTK Killer" has achieved the great feat of giving readers something more. The book is largely told through Rader himself through an exchange of letters and interviews with Ramsland. This makes for highly compelling reading. Hearing it straight from the horse's mouth is always best. Rader digs back and details the many events in his childhood that were likely the beginning of his developing into a serial killer. He explains how he operated, the things he did, and all sorts of various tidbits along the way. He also tells you his account of all the murders and a large variety of details involved in the pre-kill stages, the murder itself, and the aftermath. He attempts to divulge what was going on in his mind at the time and many of his observations in retrospect about his thought process seem very likely to have been part of his motivation. He seems to be genuine in much of what he tells. Of course, you never know how much of the stuff a serial killer tells you is actual fact, but it does seem like he is at a point where he has nothing to lose and may as well just tell the true story. Ramsland notes how Rader's narcissism and grandiose mindset may have contributed to various things he explains, but overall Rader doesn't seem to shy away from much of anything, including the embarrassment and shame that came with much of what he did.Ramsland presents a large number of factors that likely contributed to Rader becoming a serial killer. Her research is truly excellent and, although it may seem like a lot to take in, she explains a large variety of the ingrediants that ultimately become the stew of a serial killer. All the explanations are another important component to making this book such an excellent read. She importantly points out that society's basic model on serial killers needs to be updated and that some of the widely accepted answers are not in fact the case. We learn more about the mindset of these killers as time goes on and things that were once deemed fact should now be seen as possibility to take into account. For instance, this book does a great job of explaining that not all sexual homicides actually need to involve some sort of sex with the victim. In Rader's case, (I never knew this prior to reading this book) he didn't have sex with any of the victims; he got his gratification and relief through viewing a victim in bondage. It was the ropes, the terror the victim was thinking about, the image of a person in bondage, and the strangling that brought about his sexual gratification.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in true crime and serial killers. It is very thorough and well articulated. Rader's explanations and theories are mostly satisfying for the reader looking for a better understanding. Congratulations to Katherine Ramsland for adding an important chapter to serial killer literature that will likely go down in history as one of the best in the field.

This book is a chilling study into a serial killer's mind direct from his own thoughts. What makes it captivating is Dr. Ramsland's own lengthy study of Dennis Rader, and his words, from her extensive experience and knowledge. Her close connection with him allowed her to decipher his coded language and give us a deeper, layered perspective into why he committed these gruesome acts. This book should give better insight to law enforcement on how a serial killer operates, yet we also learn that there is no one pattern for serial killers. They may have some markers, but not all, and each killer is unique in their own acts. This true story drives me to peer over my shoulder and question every person around me at any given time. Adding to the horror was learning that dozens of people were marked and hunted but never killed for many reasons - he was in their houses, following them and plotting their death with great lust. Dr. Ramsland's expert commentary leads us through the terrifying mind of the BTK serial killer - and terrifies us with his "cubed" perspective on life that allowed him to be an upstanding citizen in his church and Boy Scouts while secretly living a deviant life leading to murder. Who among us is the same in hiding?

This book involves two individuals telling the tale of Dennis Rader, The BTK Killer. We have the author Katherine Ramsland who carries a PhD degree along with Dennis Rader, the psychopathic murderer of eleven individuals. I felt disgust when Rader described how he carried out his dastardly dark deeds as he appeared to enjoy his role in enlightening the reader along with the victims loved ones in the courtroom He was center stage in his role as an educator. Author Ramsland delves into the psychological reasons as to why Rader acted as he did.Rader claims he felt conflicted. Here he was "a good Christian man" taking part in behavior he knew was wrong. He enjoyed the planning involved in this cat and mouse game with the police and the community. Since he didn't wear any mask he knew he had to kill his victims so as not to leave any witnesses. He felt shame and disgust when his wife caught him dressing in women's clothing. I also felt that Rader relished the feeling when he was caught with an attitude of "Boy did I ever fool everyone, didn't I? You would have never suspected me to be the BTK killer." Any remorse Rader may have subsequently felt would probably be due to the fact that he was caught.I found some parts of the psychological interpretation to be long-winded. The book contains twelve pages of photographs but seven of the pagescontain diagrams with small printing that I didn't bother to try and decipher. Was this book written to try to understand serial killers and their tricks or just another attempt by Dennis Rader to relive and relish his sordid past? I don't claim to know the answer to this question.

So you want to know how a serial killer thinks and why they do what they do? well this book has the answers and they aren't as mysterious as you may think. I highly recommend it and I've been reading true crime for 25 years. However if you are looking for a straight BTK book about what happened, this is not the right choice read this book only after you read one of those mass market paperbacks or watch his confessions online. Ramsland is very clinical, she let's Rader do the talking and only interjects when necessary. Too many of these kinds of books the author over shadows with narrative but not Ramsland, she doesn't have a Phd for nothing, she knows it's important to let Rader do the talking mis-spellings and all for the sake of good analysis. She isn't trying to prove to you how great or how smart she is, just look up her credentials and you will see that she has no reason to. Be prepared to actually use your brain people, this isn't just some sensationalizing book, it's an excellent book and had full approval from the victims families.

Jack of Hearts was a fantastic book. First of all, I love the cover, the title, and the name of the bar. I don't know if it was intentional, but the name Aces & Eights is awesome considering the 'dead man's hand' was named after a wild west law man who was also known to be a spy. Since the Gentry's are actually undercover FBI agents, the name really is a stroke of brilliance. Although this is book one of three, there is no cliffhanger and it completely stands alone. As is her forte, Ms. Owens has once again written a fabulous book about really well-written characters – both the good guys and the bad guys, and with incredible chemistry between the main two characters. I finished this book in two sittings because once I started reading it, I needed to know how it ended and I was so into it that I didn't allow myself to get distracted by anything around me.Alex Gentry was swoon-worthy, and everything that I want in a male romance novel character. A lot of times in romance novels, FBI agents/cops act like absolute swaggering jerks under the guise of being what the genre pretends is an “alpha male”. Although Alex was extremely confident, a little hot-headed, and a smidge cocky, he was never even remotely close to being unlikable – not even when he was undercover and interacting with the dregs of humanity. He was just a flat out good guy who was trying to do the right thing, and trying to protect someone that he cared about. I really loved that about him. Granted, he was keeping secrets and not being 100% truthful, but he was doing so with the absolute best of intentions and with a tremendous amount of guilt, so forgiving him was a no-brainer for me - even before his absolutely adorable gestures of apology.Madison was a nice combination of a strong woman who was also incredibly vulnerable because of her unfailing love for her mother. Although there were times that I wanted to shake her for being too complacent, I also understood her need to keep her mother from falling apart. One of my favorite parts of this whole book was (slight SPOILERS to the end of this paragraph only) when she went 'Grasshopper' on Ramon. I was so hoping that she'd get a chance to do that, so when it happened, I wanted to fist pump for her. Also, the scene in the kitchen while Alex made breakfast made me want to cry, it was so beautiful.Along with the love story between Alex and Madison and the really interesting action story line, the secondary characters that we were supposed to like were fabulous. The ones we weren't supposed to like were so creepy and awful that I wasn't at all sad about their fates. Ramon and Trina, specifically. Every time those two were even mentioned, my skin crawled, which is a testament to Ms. Owen's talent for nailing characterization. And the 'good guys' were GREAT. I adored the Gentry boys who were both funny and entertaining in their own ways, and I am looking forward to learning more about them. I am especially anxious for Court and Lauren's book, but judging by the little glimpses of Nate we got, I think that Nate will be the wild card (pun intended) in the group. I can't wait for the rest of this series. That epilogue, though. It was not at all what I was expecting and I NEED to know more. It is going to be a long wait for the next book to be released. If you like a story with action and intrigue wrapped around a really sweet love story about two people who belong together, you should give this one a read – you won't be sorry.I requested and received an ARC of this book. I was under no absolutely obligation to review it, but did so - AND pre-ordered the book - because I very much enjoyed the the story.

The premise of this book wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but I thought I would give it a chance. I have read this authors books before. I have to say that this book ended p*ssing me off to where I just kept thinking 'nope, nope , nope'. SPOILER: The idea that the undercover FBI agent knows from the beginning he shouldn't get involved with Madison because he's undercover investigating her cousin, but pursues and dates her , and tells her he is falling in love with her, and she says the same back to him. But when she utters those three words to him, he becomes a cold ,heartless creep and dumps her.. his inner dialog is she doesn't know the real him.. WHATEVER, he always knew that, while he courted and flattered and bedded her. oh yea, dumping her right after he beds her, nice guy... I felt that was so contrived to wrench your heart out, that it didn't for me,it just insulted me...andit made him an ass I no longer cared about.. Nor did I care about the story any longer.. He could never redeem himself for me after that. Work a little harder, there could have been a real obstacle that broke them up, that was so lame,

First of all, the title of this book (I’m not going to ruin it by telling you why) is really clever. And the cover is amazing!Nobody does brothers, whether related by blood or not, like Sandra Owens. Her K2 series remains one of my favorites and I fell in love with each and every one of those guys in turn. In her new Aces and Eights series, she’s done it again. This is the first book in a new series of 3 brothers who are undercover FBI agents who own a biker bar. Alex Gentry knows he better not fall for Madison Parker, whose creepy cousin Ramon is a drug trafficker and second in command to a drug lord Alex and his brothers are after. But of course he can’t help falling for the vulnerable beauty who just wants to break free from her cousin’s control, protect her mother and learn the truth about her father’s death.Like all of Owens’ books, this book makes you fall in love with the characters and desperately wish them their happily ever after. Alex is an all-around great guy and is alpha without being obnoxious. And he will do anything to protect Madison, even though he can’t tell her his true identity as an FBI agent. Madison is tough and sassy and cares deeply about her family. The two have amazing chemistry and banter, as do the awesome Gentry brothers. You will love this new series! And the great upcoming surprise that we learn in the epilogue! Can’t wait for the next one!

Written in 1968, Thomas Savage's novel examines the lives of two brothers in 1925 who have spent most of their lives together on a Montana ranch. Phil Burbank is the good-looking one, quick to learn, well-read and well-spoken, a college graduate, and who has a mean streak that he uses to manipulate others and get his way. George is younger, kind-hearted, slower to get his words out, a college drop-out, somewhat stocky and certainly less charismatic than Phil. Phil likes to tease George in his mean way and his pet name for his brother is 'fatso'. They have shared the same bedroom since childhood and Phil is shocked when George marries and brings his wife home.George's wife, Rose, has been widowed since her husband committed suicide. Her love for George is genuine but Phil is convinced that she is a conniving, money grubbing low-life who married George only for his money. The Burbank family is very rich, coming from old Boston money which they've multiplied by having the most successful ranch in their part of the state. The Burbanks hobnob with the Governor and are big donors to many charities. Phil has made it his mission to make Rose feel as uncomfortable and unwelcome as is possible. He tries to avoid Rose and to not speak to her at all. Her stress over this creates headaches and eventually drives her to drink.Rose's son Peter doesn't live with her for most of the year. Because he is attending school, he has a room in town. A somewhat strange and effeminate child, he is very intelligent and wants to become a physician, following in his dead father's footsteps. When he does end up spending a summer on the ranch, a very strange dynamic begins to form between Phil and him. This novel tackles the subjects of repressed homosexuality, anti-semitism, and alcoholism, all somewhat edgy topics for its time. Phil is a repressed homosexual who, at first, attempts to create as much animosity towards Peter as he can. He mimics Peter to the ranch hands and they whistle at him as they would at a woman.Thomas Savage, an unknown writer to me until now, has created a brilliant psychological character study of a man whose demons pervade every aspect of his life. On the surface, Phil is a 'man's man', the one who ranchers emulate and who talks frequently about his hero, Bronco Henry, a true cowboy. However, Phil's repression creates a spew of hate towards anyone who thwarts his own twisted self-perception.Savage explores deep moral ravines and the ravages of self-hate. He is a writer that I wish I'd known about sooner and who deserves a place with the great writers of the west with whom I'm familiar - Stegner, McCormac, Proulx, and McMurtry. There is a wonderful afterwards by Annie Proulx in the edition I have which closely examines Savage's themes and characters.

I had never heard of Thomas Savage up until a month or two ago. The Power of the Dog is indeed powerful stuff though. Set in Montana ranching country in the 1920s, it deals with subjects that would have been near-verboten back then: homosexuality and pedophilia are only hinted at throughout much of Savage's book, but finally come out into the open in the final explosive chapters. The two rancher brothers, Phil and George Burbank, are two of the most fully realized characters in western fiction in the past fifty years. It would be easy to see this story as a kind of Cain and Abel parable, but it's a bit more complicated than that. As the tale progresses, you learn, bit by bit, how Phil may have come to be the way he is. While not wholly evil, he comes damn close. George, on the other hand, seems a completely sympathetic sort, albeit an unlikely hero with his slow and careful ways. The Power of the Dog is quite simply and excellent book, enough so that I will be looking for more of Savage's work. He wrote more than a dozen novels in a career that spanned over fifty years. Savage died in 2003 at the age of 88. I for one am happy that his work has been reintroduced to new generations of readers. Writer Annie Proulx has added a wonderful Afterword to this 2001 edition of the book that provides an abbreviated primer on the life and work of Thomas Savage. - Tim Bazzett, author of the Reed City Boy trilogy

Originally published in 1967 by Little Brown, this reissue has all the qualities of first-rate literary fiction, and what Annie Proulx calls in her afterword, "... a work of literary art." Then why is Thomas Savage not a big name on the literary landscape, like Hemmingway, Faulkner, or the contemporaries like Cormac McCarthy or Proulx herself? I had to read Proulx's afterword to realize why readers in 1967 weren't coaxed into buying Savage's novel. There's no doubt in my mind that it was a review blitz that damned its progress, and though Proulx's afterword comes highly in praise, I fear that one of her earlier points could still have the same effect even today. In THE POWER OF THE DOG, set in the 1920's on a Montana ranch, brothers and polar opposites, Phil and George Burbank, share the duties of managing one of the wealthiest ranching operations in the state. Though powerful and envied by many, the Burbanks battle their own form of intrapersonal loneliness. George -- the younger of the two, a stocky, polite and quiet type, who doesn't mind a suit of clothes and can often be seen driving his Reo automobile -- is forever holding back the manipulating ways of Phil, a lean and rugged cowboy who rarely changes his work clothes, bathes once a month (and not at all in the wintertime), and never wears gloves of any kind for any reason. The only force that could ever bring the relationship face to face is undoubtedly a woman, but contrary to most plots, this woman is loved by one, and despised by the other. Phil humiliates the woman's husband publicly to the point where he commits suicide. George is soon there to console her, remedying his own need for love and companionship. After a short courtship he brings her home to the ranch as his wife. Not at all happy, Phil is determined to drive her away, and hopefully before her son -- away at boarding school and one Phil calls a sissy - comes to stay for the summer. THE POWER OF THE DOG is a rich and enthralling tale, brilliantly written with all the qualities of most classic literature. Larry Watson, author of MONTANA 1948 referred to it as "... a masterpiece." With "... the dynamics of family, the varieties of love, and the ethos of the American West." That review alone might have induced more readers, but the Publisher's Weekly review of January 2, 1967, may have proved that the novel wasn't ready for an audience not yet exposed to the hidden community, or the gay rights movement of later in that decade, thus having "... strong literary but rather less commercial appeal." Though it is hinted in the novel that Phil is a repressed homosexual, it is not so blatant that it becomes disturbing, even to most homophobics. The story has so many other stronger qualities that far outweigh any alarming aspect of Phil's implied nature, that it should not have turned away any reader in 1967, no more than it would turn them away in 2001. THE POWER OF THE DOG is undoubtedly a classic novel, and Thomas Savage a treasure to the letters.

Excellent (though very dark) prose. There was an aura of 'gloom and doom' throughout this novel. A sense of impending trouble and sadness was on every page, and the ENDING did not disappoint. I sort of of figured out the driving plot, but the final few pages dealt a real surprise. Highly recommend to anyone who likes to read all genres. Actually wanted to give 4.5 stars.
