Info is Good. I have to say I was so surprised at the size of this book for the price. It is a small paperback. I was expecting g somethin a little more substantial for the price.

If you, like me, began to wonder what are all those ingredients in soap, shampoo, rinse, toothpaste, dish soap, floor care, cleaning products, hair care, moisturizers and the myriad of facial products, well you need to get this book because there are a lot of negative ingredients that we do not need to be endangering our body with. Buy pure. Look for items without the ingredients you pinpoint in the book. This book informs you about every chemical product, additives, and so forth. It is an education that will make you healthier and be a wiser purchaser.

As an esthetician, this is very handy to have. I bring it to work and break down ingredients lists on products so that I can sell them knowing howthe product really works. A must have for any professional in the beauty industry.

I first check this book out at the library and after getting past the first chapter I knew it was a must have book! This book has everything you ever wanted to know about the ingredient in that product you're using, don't trust the labeling, knowledge is power!

Must have for skin care professionals! Really terrific book. I got the paperback and it’s the perfect size to throw in your purse to study on the go!

This book is an easy read and simple to understand. The first couple of chapters explain skin anatomy, physiology, skin types and problems which is essential to know which products to use. The rest of the book walks you through alphabetical order products ingredients. A must have for skin care

Unfortunately this book did not come along with my textbooks for esthetics school. It is a great resource and concise definitions. Love it.

Tremendously useful: I love this. Very thorough, and doesn't engage in mumbo-jumbo. Can all the claims be proved? I don't know. Maybe no one does. (How many labs have peer-reviewed work on the efficacy of witch hazel extract?) But for the home lotion-maker and for anyone trying to navigate the miles of aisles of skin-care and cosmetic products, this is a helpful compendium. No fluff, no filler. Recommended.

A skincare must- whether you formulate or just want to know what is in your skincare- easy, simple and a good reference book- well worth the cost

I should have done more research and checked out the number of pages of this little book. I was disappointed and it may be my own fault. But this book is very thin, more like a chapter of a book or perhaps a pamphlet. The information might be helpful for someone new to carving but it's nothing that isn't already in the front chapters of many other more extensive books on the subject. It could be helpful for someone who wanted to carve one particular type of character. It does have some nice pictures to stimulate the imagination but not much on how to do anything but the one main carved figure shown in the step by steps. I'll probably find someone to give this to who wants to start whittling.

When I decided to pick up a caricature carving book I was thrilled by the number of titles available. This excitement soon turned to confusion as I tried to decide which books to add to my cart and which to leave on the Amazon.com shelf. A large part of the problem was that most of the books within the field of caricature carving seemed to carry a 4 or 5 star rating which prevented me from enacting Rule No.1 of my AMAZON RULE OF PURCHASE which states: All things being equal, purchase the item with the highest customer rating. So with Rule No.1 nullified I found myself pouring over page after page of LOOK INSIDE in an attempt to narrow down my choices. Unfortunately, that wasn't much help either so I took the unprecedented step of just buying EVERY caricature carving book I could find that carried a 4 or 5 star rating.10 days and 5 titles later I'm ready to offer you my feedback, based on a few essential criteria, in the hopes that I'll save you both the time and the money I invested. Before I get to my ratings, let me run down the criteria I used to make my assessments:1) Larger books with good color photography trump smaller books with black & white photography.2) Books that provide step-by-step instruction are far superior than photographic collections of finished projects.3) Books that provide complete instruction, from wood selection to painting techniques, are better than books offering scant or piecemeal instruction.4) Because individual carvers have unique styles, I found that the books that contained the works of numerous carvers were far more instructional than those containing the works of just one carver. With those 4 criteria in mind, my top 5 caricature carving books are:1) Caricature Carving: Expert Techniques & 30 All-Time Favorite Projects ~ The BEST of the bunch. Wonderful photographs outlining the steps required to carve the works of numerous different artists. Instructions run from wood selection all the way to paint selection with everything in between including which tools to use. If you have a limited budget or you just want to own one caricature carving book then this is the one for you. 5 STARS2) Caricature Carvers Showcase ~ Unlike the #1 selection, this title does not include ANY step-by-step instructions on carving so if you're looking for an instructional guide, this ISN'T it. So why do I rate it so highly? Because it contains wonderful color photographs of the work of 50 different carvers; and while it's a mystery HOW the artists created their work, you can't help but shake your head in amazement at the finished product. 4½ STARS3) Whittling Little Folk ~ A smaller text from a single artist. The work here is more basic than most caricature carvers which is not necessarily a bad thing for the novice carvers among us. Good step-by-step color photography. The first 2 projects are covered in detail from wood selection to final coat of paint. The final 15 or so projects are described in far less detail. Not as flashy as some of the other titles, but this one grew on me and was actually the source book for my very first carving effort. 4 STARS4) Caricature Carving from Head to Toe ~ A decent text that contains thorough, step-by-step instructions and photographs leading to the creation of an elderly gentleman caricature. The book contains the work of just one artist so you'll garner just one perspective which I think is a major limitation. A gallery of the artists work rounds out the text, and while his work is of the highest quality it's not as varied as that of a collection of artists. 3 STARS5) Carving the Little Guys ~ With just 31 pages this is more of a pamphlet than a book. The text is again the work of a single artist who's forte appears to be basic caricatures. Good photographs instruct the reader in the production of just a single, basic caricature (is the black thing under his nose a tongue or a moustache?). Overall, rather disappointing. 2 STARSSo there you have it, I hope that saves you the time I lost as well as the money I spent!

... you like to learn the basics, then quickly branch out into doing your own thing, or experimenting. If you are looking for "insert Tab A into Slot B" instructions for every Little Guy pictured on the cover, you may not like this.As other reviewers noted, the book is thin - only 31 pages. But the majority of that is taken up with detailed instructions for how to carve one Little Guy, complete with large, detailed pictures. Then there are several pages of information on how to modify that basic form into anything you want (with more good, clear pictures). That's what I love best about it! I've never been very good at doing the simpler, beginner pieces when learning a new hobby. I always want to jump ahead to something of my own design. It's a curse, and has caused me a lot of grief in the past, as sometimes I'm not ready, skill-wise, to do that, and I end up frustrated. But this book is set up perfectly for that. You learn the basics on the detailed project, then you can take off on your own, modifying and experimenting, with tips from the book. Will I screw up a lot of Little Guys before I start getting them the way I want them? Probably. But that's okay! It's part of the process of learning any new skill. And just to reiterate, it's not a total free-for-all - the basic instructions are very detailed and more than sufficient to get you on your way. I am a brand new carver with no past experience and no particularly inherent skill at it, but my first Little Guy turned out pretty darned good - not as good as the book's example, but way better than I expected - following those first detailed instructions.A note about wood, in case anyone is doing what I did. I saw this book on another website sold as a kit, with 9 blocks of basswood to carve the Little Guys. I only came here initially to read reviews on the book (as the other site didn't have any). I thought maybe those blocks of wood were specially selected to be the exact size you needed to carve Little Guys, and it might save me the trouble of finding some place to buy wood. But it was pricey ($20 for the kit, so about $11 just for the wood). In the end I decided to buy the book from Amazon and wait and see what the requirements were for wood. I'm glad I did. That kit was pointless, as the author recommends starting with blocks that are 1" x 1" by 2" - and none of the blocks in the kit were that size anyway. I got a bag of different size basswood blocks from my local Michael's Craft Store for about $5 or $6 and they are perfect for carving these guys. (They ranged from 1 x 1 1/2 to 1 x 2, and I did trim them to 1x1 using a bandsaw, but you could trim them with any small saw, or just carve the extra bits away, or just make your Little Guy a slightly different size). The author recommends starting with basswood because it's easy to carve (true!) but also says you can use anything carveable, and recommends experimenting with found wood - I love that concept, and not being told I HAVE TO buy such and such particular, expensive piece of something in order to do this. In theory, except for a good knife, you could carve a village full of Little Guys (and Gals) without spending another dime. That's my kind of hobby. So, to sum up, if you're okay with learning some very detailed basic instructions, then moving on to experimenting, this book couldn't be better. I can't wait to try all the ideas I have, and since they're adorably small and inexpensive to make, I can experiment to my heart's content without breaking the bank. I'm really, really glad I got this book, and have a feeling it will amuse me and keep me busy for a long time. (Little Guys are addicting!)

Maybe if you were just starting carving, there is not enough detail in this book.First, the brief section on honing is very inadequate. He could have included some polishing compounds and grit. There are also commercially available honing kits (see Amazon - Flexcut).Next, the safety section didn't even mention a carving glove for the hand not holding the knife. Not guarding your "off" hand is extremely dangerous. Again, there are some on Amazon. I have a problem getting the right fit on gloves, so I went to a wood working store so I could try them on.As far as a carving guide, there are no patterns, and he only shows how to do one character. You will find more and better instructions on YouTube.I was expecting more about how to carve figures, with some attention to eyes, mouth and the other hard parts.

Caught in the Pulpit: Leaving Belief Behind, by Daniel C. Dennett

Review

“One of the most intriguing developments in modern American religion has been the increasing numbers of those who have lost their faith—not only the person in the pew but also the person in the pulpit. Caught in the Pulpit tells the entangled stories of these conflicted leaders of the faithful, first-hand accounts that are fascinating, eye-opening, and filled with pathos. This expanded second edition is a ‘must read’ for anyone interested in the current state of religion and the claims of faith.” —Bart D. Ehrman, distinguished professor of Religious Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and author, Misquoting Jesus“The new edition of Caught in the Pulpit extends and reinforces the message of the first: that many who preach religion do not themselves believe what they preach, for the good reason that they have more insight into its vacuity than those to whom they preach. Some are tragically trapped in this hypocrisy, some choose to keep living the lie: but knowing this adds to our sense of the lie that is religion itself. This is an important book, because it reveals an important truth.” —A.C. Grayling, Master of the New College of the Humanities London and author, The Good Book: A Humanist Bible"Reading Caught in the Pulpit is like listening in on intimate conversations, even confessions, of clergy who doubt the very beliefs they are paid to teach and support. Dennett and LaScola address their subjects with both skill and compassion, yielding expert philosophical and sociological analysis. A fascinating read." —Mary Johnson, author, An Unquenchable Thirst“People often ask me, ‘How could you become an atheist when you were a pastor?’ I always answer, ‘Exactly by being a pastor!’ . . . This book is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the process of losing faith. Though these stories are about clergy, their feelings and experiences will resonate for anyone who has been down this road." —Ryan J. Bell, former pastor and writer, Year Without God"With care and sympathy, Dennett and LaScola bring light to some darker corners of the religious life.” —Philip Kitcher, John Dewey Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University and author, Life After Faith: The Case for Secular Humanism "Profound, honest, and revealing. I was also going to write 'surprising,' but I am not surprised. As a former preacher myself (who has since abandoned supernatural beliefs), I know exactly what is going through the minds of the clergy who are struggling with faith and reason. What I most admire about this book is the careful, scientific approach to the topic. . . . I know I am biased, but that does not mean this is not a GREAT book!" —Dan Barker, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and author, Life Driven Purpose: How an Atheist Finds Meaning"This book provides remarkable insight into a silently growing demographic." —Hemant Mehta, editor, FriendlyAtheist.com

I was also going to write "Surprising," but I am not surprised. As a former preacher myself (who has since abandoned supernatural beliefs), I know exactly what is going through the minds of the clergy who are struggling with faith and reason. What I most admire about this book is the careful, scientific approach to the topic. Dan Dennett's philosophical and moral insights combined with Linda LaScola's professional methodology make this not just another "anti-faith" tome, but an extremely useful objective examination of the phenomenon of the many ministers, priests, imams and rabbis who want to leave the pulpit but are "caught" in the horrible dilemma of choosing integrity over practicality and morality. (Disclosure: I know and admire Dan and Linda personally.) Whether a reader agrees with the philosophical and theological conclusions of these doubting clergy, no reader can deny that this is a fascinating study of a real problem: what happens to your career and life when your faith IS your career, and you give up your faith? I also loved reading Dan and Linda's personal stories at the end. It is nice to see Linda, who maintains a professional objectivity while interviewing and researching, actually tell us something about herself and her motivations. I know I am biased, but that does not mean this is not a GREAT book!

An alternate sub-title for this book could be: "Leaving Supernatural Beliefs Behind." Caught in the Pulpit should be widely read for the issues it raises about the roles of the clergy and the future of churches in an increasingly secular, pluralistic society. Its major value is in stimulating the kinds of conversations that need to be ongoing among believers, non-believers, atheists, humanists, Christians, adherents of the world's religions, and all those who care about creating a humane world for all peoples. The authors describe many kinds of faith and unfaith, focusing on both 1) clergy who struggle to maintain their integrity in institutions that are changing and who are supported by their members even when their understandings differ; and 2) churches that are evolving in a cultural context that no longer provides a "sacred canopy" to support their world views. (Full disclosure: I was "Rick," one of the original five "subjects" in the study in 2010; I was an "outlier" who never felt "caught"). Neither clergy nor religious communities have a clear blueprint for how to adapt. The authors prescribe strong doses of honesty, but they do not provide many positive or practical suggestions for moving beyond the ancient "atheist versus theist" debates, or how churches as social institutions might be helped to change. But they do give an inside glimpse into some of the problems that must be confronted if religious communities and their leaders are to evolve into cultural movements capable of continuing to contribute to creative human transformation and ecological flourishing. Dennett and LaScola persuasively describe the discomfort of clergy who can no longer affirm "acceptable" orthodoxy. They also consider the potential evolutionary extinction of churches. They wonder whether removing supernatural elements from beliefs about God, the Bible, Jesus, creeds, and doctrines might help churches evolve into more relevant social movements in our increasingly secular scientific culture. While the purpose of the study was to raise questions, I wish they could have done more to identify already existing non-supernatural ways to interpret and re-construct religions that honor the humane values that non-believers and believers alike can affirm. Some theologians, biblical scholars, church bodies, and progressive clergy are contributing to these efforts of reimagining, drawing on the core historical principle of many churches: "reformed and always reforming." Yet the authors are correct in their assessment that while many liberal and evangelical churches have made significant contributions to ethical discourse, social justice, human rights, and equality for gays, women, and racial/ethnic communities, most of them have not updated their statements of faith to reflect our modern scientific world view (which, it must be admitted, has itself not been free from violence, war, repression and bloody conflict). Finally, the book leaves open the question of whether the churches will evolve or die. That may be partly up to courageous clergy like those in this study, to the religious communities which formed them, and to whether there can be cooperation between them and the emerging communities of humanists and freethinkers that are evolving alongside them. -Mark Rutledge

It's amazing to learn that there's actually a website called the clergy project which is a gathering point for clergy members (priests, pastors, ministers, rabbis, etc.) who no longer believe in God – many of whom are still pastoring their congregations but are afraid to come out as atheists because they will lose income, family, prestige, friends, etc. This book focuses on interviews with a number of these clergy members and I like how it had a wide sample with many different Orthodox, Catholic and Christian denominations and even one Rabbi, and they all dealt with their loss of faith differently. Some of them were still in ministry, some had retired, some had quit, and they were all from different walks of life. There were also several seminary professors who were interviewed and a seminary student or 2 who dropped out and felt like they had "dodged a bullet." It seemed that education, in the form of reading material that contradicted or criticized Christianity is what led these people away from their faith, they started out wanting to learn about atheism or different belief systems, often in order to defend their faith from them, and they ended up being convinced by them. Another number of them started questioning when they could not explain the "unanswerable questions" such as "why do bad things happen to good people" to grieving parishioners, etc. Others were disillusioned actually in the seminary, when they were taught biblical history and archaeology and realize that the Bible was not written in the way they thought it was or did not meet what they thought it did. This was a really good book, though was a little slow at times, it had a lot of interesting perspective in it. I can't imagine being the pastor of a large church whose congregation did not know that I was an atheist or agnostic (or in some cases, just a believer in a kind of nebulous, impersonal force that they call God)

We have a half dozen books on servlets lying around the office, and I've also read the online tutorial from Sun. Nothing compares in breadth, depth, or clarity to Hunter and Crawford's "Java Servlet Programming".Luckily, the second edition does not tinker with the tried and true formula of the first: brief overview, hello world servlet, a thorough overview of the HTTP protocol itself and the architecture of servlets, a discussion of thread and resource issues, and a standalone chapter on session management. Despite the 700+ pages of this book (are authors paid by the pound these days?), this core introduction remains only 200 pages and change. Each topic is presented with definitions and clear, yet realistic code examples. The authors not only provide advice on how to use servlets effectively, but also provide numerous suggestions on how to avoid common pitfalls and misconceptions. The remaining 500 pages cover topics such as security, internationalization, database connectivity and communicating with applets. Although these are not really servlet-specific issues, they are almost always present in some combination on web sites, and the authors indicate the peculiar way in which the standard Java approaches to these problems interact with the servlet architecture. Each is presented in its own clear chapter with several examples. The beauty of these chapters is that like good code, they're modular and can be read in any order. In what I think is a sensible organization, Java Server Pages (JSPs) and "application frameworks" are left for last. Both are well defined and illustrated. There's also 50 pages of reference, but frankly, I prefer the javadoc.

This is one of the best books for learning Java Servlets. Itprovides the reader with clear examples and throughout explanations ofthe Servlet API v2.0. The topics discussed in this book reflectsituations that might surface in the real world. The only problemthat arises with this book is that the Servlet API is now in version2.2 with version 2.3 really close to being available to the public. Therefore some of the methods and/or classes presented here aredeprecated and were replaced or eliminated in the latter versions. Anexample of this is class javax.servlet.http.HttpSessionContext Iread at the author's site...that he's releasing a new edition soonwith updated information. I throughly recommend this book even ifyou are using a newer version of the API, since the core servlettechnology hasn't changed much. If you want to learn servlets justfor acquiring the knowledge, you might want to wait for the secondedition. Otherwise get this book to get on the fast track into thisexciting technology.

that have been plaguing the online servlet interest group for months. In addition to covering all the topics of the first session, Jason (Will Crawford did not contribute to this edition) brings the content nearly up-to-date with all the dizzying array of developments in the servlet API, Tomcat , and the Web Applications Framework that have taken place since publication of the first edition (October 1998).In particular, he illuminates the dark recesses of XML deployment descriptors, Tomcat 3.2, J2EE, the Tea and WebMacro frameworks WAP, XMLC and the changes from JSDK 1.0 to 2.2. Every topic is accompanied by working code snippets and often the code builds on itself so the would-be servlet programmer can participate in the development of complex applications from simple beginnings. I say "nearly up-to-date" because Tomcat 4.0 beta, incorporating JSDK 2.3 has been released, but to Jason's credit, he devotes an entire chapter on 2.3! This is about as current as hardcopy gets these days!My copy of the first edition is falling apart from constant use as a reference and already my copy of the 2d Edition is showing signs of wear. I could not recommend this book highly enough. If more people bought and read it, my email from the servlet interest group would no doubt decrease by an order of magnitiude!April 25, 2001

Jason Hunter has an excellent writing style that really helped me understand what servlets are and how they work. The information is presented in a way that I can work with for developing solutions quickly. I especially like the say Jason Hunter de-mystifies this particular Web technology. Great job! Hope to see another way on EJB or XML soon!!

OK

I am presently reading Java Servlet Programming...It is very informative and fun to read...Mr. Hunter should probably update the book since it is over 10 years old....however all the examples seem to work.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in programming in Java...however updating the book will be very beneficialto the author (more people will buy the book) and to the Java coounity.Valent Vella

I never knew anything about servlet programming this book just jump started me to write server side programme. One of the best book in servlets. Good examples the authors are thorough in every aspect. Its my Bible for Servlet and JSP programming.

thank you

Review

"Diversity is a crucial issue, and this series effectively highlights the differences among various ethnic groups, religions, and types of households and shows readers that though different beliefs and customs exist, all are equally worthy of respect. The books are told from the first-person perspectives of young protagonists who interact with people in their communities, which will help kids relate directly to the subject matter. The cheerful, appealing illustrations complement the text, which is clear and straightforward yet also nuanced and culturally sensitive. Covering topics such as meals, languages, houses of worship, and a diverse and inclusive mix of families, the series emphasizes that it's best not to ignore differences but to learn more about them. VERDICT: All students can benefit from this series."―School Library Journal, Series Made Simple--Journal

For kindergarten

David was learning a lot about baseball from his friend Zach who was a thirteen-year-old boy. Zach had invited him to his synagogue, but David was worried and talked to his Dad. “What if I don’t understand things? What if I do something wrong?” His Dad reassured him that everything would go well and he talked to him about being respectful. Zach was going to have a bar mitzvah and it was a very important birthday for him. It was really interesting for David to learn about a kippah, Hebrew, the prayers and the singing, but it also was a lot of fun!On Sunday when David and his Dad went to their church, Grace Lutheran Church, he learned a bit more about religion. David also went to a Catholic church with his Mom and learned that they were “different kinds of Christian churches.” David had all kinds of questions for his father and he tried to answer them. When they were volunteering at a place that served food to those in need, he asked Sophia about her church. Sophia said that “her family isn’t a part of a religion.” David began to be interested in other religions and took a closer look at others around him. He learned about Muslims, Buddhism, Christianity, and some of their celebrations. Do you know about other religions? This is a fun, pensive book that will encourage young children to learn about and respect other religions. David is aware of other religions, but doesn’t know much about them. He becomes curious when attending the synagogue where Zach has his bar mitzvah. Many children can explore the different religions on their own, but it would make a great classroom project to share with a friend or friends. Just by looking around him, David finds there are many different religions and beliefs. He also discovers that some people aren’t part of any religion. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary of terms used in the text, a “Make a ‘How I Can Help’ List” activity, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.
