It was 2005 when The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, 4th edition, was published and has therefore been a few years we have had to wait for Everything Scrabble to catch up. The wait has been well worth it. It is almost 75 pages longer with expanded strategy examples and illustrations. Of course, all of the usual lists are there too, expanded in most cases, in line with the words added to the 4th edition of the Scrabble dictionary.Some highlights: There are now 101 acceptable two-letter words. There are more q-without-u words. The 3-and-4-letter J, X,Z words section has a few more words. The consonant challenge list is the same. The 4-to-8-letter words that include at least 66% vowels list has some more words. The 2-to-make-3 word list has been updated and expanded. The 3-letter words list has been expanded.Whether you are new to the Scrabble Crossword Game or this book or you are experienced and are simply interested, as I was, in updating your book to get the most from it, I recommend the Everything Scrabble, 3rd edition. The book describes the game fantastically and also offers some history of the game and trivia and history of tournaments. There is also information to help you advance into a club player, if you so wish. Numbers don't lie, so here are a few worth considering. I've had this book for about two weeks. I've read the first 6 chapters entirely, and peeked at the chapters regarding finding bingos, rack management (what to play v what to leave for your next turn), how to play the S and blanks to best advantage, etc etc. I play FB Scrabble regularly with my friends, and am an English major with a fairly good vocabulary. As of this writing, I have two "in-progress" games where my scores are 1) 449 after 11 moves; and 2) 294 after 6 moves, up considerably from my previous games against the same opponents - two more sales for Amazon for sure!Some of that is probably luck... Beyond luck, however, the difference is not necessarily the words I am playing. With the help of Everything Scrabble, I am definitely thinking more about which words to play and where to play them; spotting more parallel plays (the two letter word list is invaluable); anlayzing which letters to save and which to unload immediately (and it's not always Q!); playing S and blank tiles more strategically - the list goes on and I'm not even finished reading! The puzzles and diagrams will definitely build your Scrabble skills no matter your starting level, and your vocabulary skills will get a boost as well, espcecially for words containing J,Z,X and Q without U! What's more, it's a very enjoyable book to read - you're learning and having a blast in the process. You will also learn some fascinating Scrabble history, so don't hesitate, just purchase and watch your Scrabble game improve!

purchased both the official scrabble players dictionary & everything scrabble: 3rd ed. although they're both helpful paperback texts, my preference is the latter because it's larger (7 x 9"), as is its font, & has some very informative chapters, e.g., what to do with the q, with & without a u and j, x & z words. there's also appendices on figuring out what your opponent has, useful stems & forming all vowel words. although some may prefer the dictionary, its paperback version (4 x 7") & the ensuing small font make it arduous to easily use. (years ago, i gave the hardback edition to a scrabble fiend; it is a preferable size, which is still being pored over today.) although both books have the word scrabble in their title, don't let that detract you. they're valuable for many word games, including those online.

My wife and I play Scrabble about once a month; I saw the movie about the Scrabble tournament. Then I met a court reporter (I am a lawyer) who revealed he was ranked among the top 100 players in the USA among Scrabble aficionados. Up to that moment, I looked at this guy as a socially awkward misfit--but as he began to share the complicated strategies employed at the highest level of competition--well, my view of him did not change but he recommended this book since I was interested in the game and I purchased a copy. The first third of the book is fascinating--as the author reveals the techniques used by the top players--but the remaining bulk of the book consists of challenging game scenarios that require more interest than I was able to muster. The thing about Scrabble--you need not know the definitions of the words you use--you just need to know that they are actual words and how to spell them correctly (or incorrectly if you are bluffing). The latest dictionary used by Scrabble heads(published in 2005) contains modern words(up to seven letters as that is generally all you will use in this game) and some of them are so off the wall it seems unfair--and ultimately, the top players are just good memorizers. And it takes a certain type of mind to extricate the high scoring words from a random selection of 7 letters.The author suggests randomly switching the tiles around--it works!! And pay attention to the tiles you leave behind. There is no end. But hey--bottom line--do you play Scrabble? Want to get better and learn more about it? This book fits the bill. My wife usually complains that I take too much time making my word selections. This book urges use of a clock/timer--like the serious players use. I am looking into that.

I'd recommend it to anyone who is even a casual home game player. It's easy to follow and they explain advanced concepts in a manner that is really easy to follow.

I pounced on this copy of Aesop's Fables remembering how much they taught me when i was little. there is an alarming dearth of morals today and when a child is young these fables assist to set the stage for such sensbilities. You really want this to teach this level of behavior because although most children naturally have some of these qualities most don't have all. Here's a neat way to teach without lecturing endlessly on subjects that can become so complicated that the whole idea falls out for a child. Buy this and read it. You only have them young once - make it good.

Lovely art if that is what you are getting it for. If you are getting it to read to you children them skip this version. I have an older edition and the language is rich, eloquent and beautiful. Why do we insist on dumbing down our children? Trust me, kids can understand dynamic language just fine. This is a poor edition.

Based on the reviews I made sure to purchase a hardback edition. However, we purchased a used edition from an independent seller. We got the 1st edition from Chronicle books, however it did not look like the pictures. I have attached some pictures to show. The Rose and the butterfly picture is included in the book but is not on the cover. Each fable is illustrated by a different artist. This is an interesting approach, but I don't always care for all the styles.I bought this for my daughter who is 3. She's a bit young to understand the moral lesson of the fables, however this is a nice book to have in a child's library. I have been enjoying reading the fables which I hadn't read since I was a child, as now I am better able to appreciate the morals.

Classic Aesop's not the watered down "feel good" versions available in most copies today. Good lessons, with the original consequences. Definitely worth it if you don't want your kids to be "snowflakes" (easily melted) in the midst of adversity and the need for critical thinking and discernment.

As other reviewers have said, the worst thing about this is the fact that the stories have all been "updated". A lot of the charm was lost from the original stories, at least in my opinion. The morals do still remain, so it doesn't make them irrelevant. The pictures are extremely beautiful, too, so if you don't mind the changes to the story, then it's well worth a dollar.

Aesop's fables have been around for two thousand five hundred years. Their morals apply to real life.Most readers will be familiar with a handful of them such as The Fox and the Grapes and The Tortoise and the Hare. These are well-known for a reason – they are the best of them. The total collection runs to three hundred or so stories, most of which are not as well worth repeating.However, the price is right and the good ones are true gems. They have been translated into every world language. They are short – usually half a page apiece. As a substitute teacher of foreign languages I have often used them to keep a class occupied for forty-five minutes. Most schools have minimal expectations of substitute teachers. They expect us to show a movie such as Finding Nemo in German, Spanish French or whatever to occupy the period. The kids of course go to sleep – they have seen the movie a hundred times in English. Aesop's fables is a great alternative. It keeps them awake and engaged. They might even learn something.

The CD is an excellent addition to this book! While the book contains over 100 stories the CD covers 42 of the best of them and references the title of each story and the page it can be found in the book.For parents who would like to convert the disc to MP3 files and add the story/track information here is a list of are all the stories on the CD. If you use J. Part of our piano class curriculum. This is a good primer on music theory, but it would be advisable to have some of the basics down before starting this book.

Great book but better to get the full book as there isn't a volume 2 and this is a good beginning but not complete.

This book is a step by step self-teaching course in basic music reading, It can be used without the help of a teacher.

Very poor book. Unlike her original one which I have. This one has very little material in it. It is too basic. I would definitely not recommend it to anyone. It is a waste of money.

I needed to fill out this book to get extra credit in a class... The copy I received was already filled out so it was just a waste of money.

Some of the talking points and statistics in this book are quite interesting to learn about. I feel however that the book is too textbook - Statistics and graphs and redundant points get tiresome. Of course, this is partly my fault since I was not aware of the authour's writing style prior to buying the book.Ultimately the book fills us in on the laissez-faire going-ons of the U.S. government. Some of it is I'm sure well-known fact and some it may well surprise some of you who do not necessarily follow politics closely. I personally feel the issues posed in this book are bound to be replicated in future administrations just as government really has not changed in the last 70 to 100 years, so ultimately I believe the readers of this book will become jaded a week after reading.Then again...perhaps I am a pessimist?NOTE: I just noticed that I reviewed the paperback edition by accident - I purchased the Kindle Edition - It doesn't change my review of the book of course; however, I would point out that the Kindle Edition suffers from some poor formatting.

Allison Stanger's new book, One Nation Under Contract: The Outsourcing of American Power And The Future of Foreign Policy, is must reading for anyone concerned with the architecture of foreign policy. It is particularly valuable for those of us whose public service predates the outsourcing explosion of recent years. Prof. Stanger paints her picture of the wholly transformed landscape that statesmen inhabit in the 21st century with stunning hard data meticulously collected and analyzed. It is this grounding of her argument in numbers that pierced the shell of experiential knowledge that blinded me to the transformation of institutions I once worked in and now study.Her argument is that the U.S. government has embraced outsourcing its overseas agenda as a solution for every international problem, with disastrous unintended consequences. That combined with a simultaneous explosion of creative initiatives bubbling up from below, both in the for-profit and not-for profit sectors, have real foreign policy impact. For her, the transformation of the politics and process of foreign policy elevates the "how" above the "what" and means that implementation defines the substance and has led to a militarization of American foreign policy. Finally, she situates these power shifts of the disaggregated state within the context of a private sector populated by corporations with unprecedented global muscle.As a gardener, I understand the importance of surging plant material in the landscape. When I began gardening in earnest on Cape Cod in 2004, I planted native shrubs, like Red Osier Dogwood, to quickly fill the gaps until the specimen trees I had planted to replace our beloved but dying Pitch Pines could mature. For years the Red Osier performed beautifully. Then, I noticed that they were overwhelming the garden scheme by suckering and fountaining. Suckers, as any good gardener knows, are often undesirable because "the plant's energy is diverted to the sucker rather than to crown growth." The solution is to prune those suckers and, every few years, reshape the plant to constrain its growth and conform its shape to the desired landscape.Allison Stanger has the same advice for the U.S. government: get out those loppers. Collaboration with private sector entities in pursuit of national security is essential in this networked world and certain naturalizing of government functions in the private sector is healthy. The foreign affairs landscape is changing organically and cannot be returned to some old-fashioned topiary filled parterre. But, if the national interest and the public good are to be served rather than private profit, principals in the foreign affairs agencies need to get out their shears and prune those suckers!

This book was a good read, gets fairly well into the subject. Only complaint I have is that now I'm pissed off about the massive waste. LOL

Started it and lost it before I could finish... Was a bit to much for myself to handle.

Very insightful and informative book. The subject is detailed and explained well, for every reader to feel theimpact that our country experiences with using businesses within government to operate. The association is a two edgedeffect, and has implications far beyond stated public political policies. A must read for any American!

To be honest, I couldn't finish the book. Initially it was interesting and was thinking that it was going to be more about factual anecdotes about how the government outsources much of its power overseas and how it went wrong but it seems more of a term paper with constant references to other books and articles.

The book give us a clear picture about the enormous problems that the goverment is facing because the abnoxious influence of the special interest and the corrupt politicians that are at their service...geed is the name of the game.
