This book is so terrible that I could not make it past the first CD. The author states that if your children are disrespectful, moody, etc, it is the parents' fault because you are either too permissible or too strict. The way to have well-behaved children is to be perfectly balanced but then never provides any information as to how to achieve this perfect balance. The one piece of advice he does provide is contrary to all parenting advice books for good reason--it's terrible. One of this author's ideas is that if your child is disrespectful, don't say anything at the time or inform the child that the tone is not appropriate. Instead, spring a punishment on him or her hours or days later as a gotcha. In our house, we have rules and consequences and consistency is key. Surprising them with a punishment for a conversation a day before that they forgot would not teach them any lesson. I was hoping for a book to help me relate to them while they enter adolescence when their hormones are raging and they can get angry or cry on a dime. To make matters worse, the author's sexist attitudes make listening to his content very difficult to take. In one example, he imagines a conversation at the dinner table where the son announces his desire for a Corvette. The father begins to lecture about hard work and the mother says, "What is a Corvette?" as if women have no idea about cars because they are women. His assumptions about women are sprinkled throughout, including assuming are the mom is the parent who is too permissive because she gave birth to the child and how pretty actresses are dumb and immoral. Finally, this was a book on CD, but the person who read the book out loud was meant to read fiction books. Self-help books really should not be read in the same tone, with the same dramatic pauses, etc, as a murder/mystery book. It needs to be read in the same tone as how you would carry on a conversation with a friend, or how you would give a TedTalk. Rather than this book, I highly recommend "How to Talk so Teens Will Listen..." That book is focused on how to take action when teens misbehave and help them make wise decisions while remaining calm and in control.

I haven't finished the book yet. However, it makes a lot of sense and things have already changed drastically. Mostly my response to sassy backtalk. Also, it has a huge understanding of what tweens and teens deal with these days. I was really skeptical but thought I'd give it a try. I even told my doctor about it and she is buying it now for her 10 year old. Doesn't matter if your kid is 18 or 9. It is really about how you handle it. Not changing them. Changing your reaction which makes a huge difference.

The advice in this book might be helpful if you're a completely permissive or authortarian parent. But if already have common sense and just happen to be a flawed human being, there is little practical to offer in here. The book seems to be centered in 50s era gender roles: the mom is the center of the house, moms are too permissive and spoil children, if a kid complains about dinner you're supposed to find out what his favorite food in to show that you care about what he thinks. If you find platitudes like "establish healthy boundaries" helpful then this book is for you. But if you want something that is concrete look elsewhere. I really liked Feber & Mazlish: How to talk so teens will listen

Read this one after borrowing the edition for younger children from a friend. Bought this because I have teenagers and was looking for more to relate directly to that age range. Found the book talks mostly about how the Dr. and his wife have done things right and have avoided having issues with their teenagers. It's clear that having teens with respect or responsibility issues can be due to too much leniency from parents when children are young, or lack of consistency - but this book gives no real direction once you figure that out and have a teen. Disappointed with this addition.

This book is such a help with kiddos. It helps me put the burden less on me losing my sanity and repeating myself over and over, and sits the burden square on the shoulders of my kiddos to do what needs to be done so they can do the things they like to do.

Fun book and full of things that really work. Thanks Dr. Leman! I recommend this for any parents of a teenager.I think there could probably be Book 2. Obviously it can't go into all the problems teenagers have, but it does cover a lot.

Great book! The biggest problem is retraining ME--the adult! The bottom line, if you want a new kid/teen by Friday, you have to be a new YOU by Friday. Dr. Leman gives solid, logical advise. The hard part is being consistent and keeping your emotions out of the conflicts with your teen.

Good tips. Mutual respect. I have often done too much for my kids. The advice, "Don't do for your kids what they can do for themselves," was so helpful. It's my mantra whenever I start to do too much.

Review

“One of the most widely read Jewish writers of his generation…Michaelson's deeply contemplative, thoughtful book will open the doors of the heart and mind to the possibility that what we have come to take for the “self” is just a way to label the way things look from a certain angle.”—Spirituality & Health magazine  “[Michaelson] writes with clarity, passion, and a poetic sensibility.”—Jewish Week “Jay Michaelson’s captivating post-secular musings present for the generation of the new Jewish culture a vision of expanded religious possibilities.”—Forward  “Stripping away the barnacles of outdated concepts, Jay Michaelson aligns the best nondual thinking in Judaism with the best nondual thinking in other profound systems. Everything Is God is a timely and necessary contribution.”—Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, coauthor of Jewish with Feeling “Jay Michaelson has written a poetic, detailed, and radical book expressing a Jewish language of oneness: not the oneness of a bearded man in the sky but the Oneness of a universe not divided against itself. He gives the reader a gift of self-beyond-the-self, a gift that cannot be owned but is well worth having.”—Rabbi Jill Hammer, author of The Jewish Book of Days “This is an awesome, highly recommended presentation of crucial mystical concepts.”—Rabbi David A. Cooper, author of God Is a Verb “Fantastic—a book that offers a compelling theology for thinking Jews! Read this book, and buy a copy for your rabbi as well.”—Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness “Michaelson patiently explains, again and again, truths that are beyond words. He shares this treasure generously and passionately.”—Rabbi Jacob Staub, Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Spirituality, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College “If my mind were not already God’s unstretchable Mind, I’d say the book is a mind-stretcher. And if the book were not already God, beyond even delight, I’d say the book is a delight.”—Rabbi Arthur Waskow, author of Godwrestling: Round 2 “Compelling . . . jolts us from an ego-centered illusion of separateness. The author’s language of oneness is certain to resonate with a younger generation of spiritual seekers.”—Jewish Book World

#515,977 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Comparative religions scholar Jeffrey Kripal, in the book Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom, describes how writing about religious and mystical experience is itself a kind of mystical experience. The writing about these elusive topics is mind-expanding and spiritually engrossing for the writer. This is true, I think, of reading about mystical experience and about other people's spiritual quests. I certainly have found that true about Jay Michaelson's moving and inspirational Everything is God. I have read a chapter each night before going to bed and felt the soothing power of his words as I have fallen asleep. In the morning, his wisdom has nicely informed my meditation. Reading this book has been a wonderful experience. Michaelson derives much of the wisdom he explicates from Jewish sources that I have not been particularly familiar with, and that I have been pleased to learn of. I am impressed with Kabbalah and other sources of mystical wisdom about what Michaelson calls "Nondual Judaism." Nondual is a term that's become more and more popular and familiar for a religious/mystical insight that human beings are somehow "parts" of God. This is the mystical experience of Union with the Divine. But it is not just an ecstatic experience for zealots and ascetics. It's the fundamental truth of religion--and it transcends myth and belief. The book can be understood as a meditation on a story told early on by Ram Dass. It's about anthropomorphized waves in the ocean who are realizing that they are about to reach the shore and will be dashed apart. The wisdom they discover as they approach the beach--and the end--is that "you're not a wave, you're water." Similarly, we're not solitary individuals living our 70 or 80 years and then being dashed on the shore of time. We ARE the consciousness that is experiencing all this. We're not waves, we're the water. We are the consciousness of the universe that is metaphorized as God. This book does a wonderful job of explaining religion in a way that explains it away, then brings it all back with new and more powerful meaning. It's like the old Zen saying (in Donovan's words): "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is."Reviewed by Toby Johnson, author of Finding Your Own True Myth: What I Learned from Joseph Campbell

Everything is God is a book with a great deal of heart. The reader can easily tell that Jay Michaelson is a very sincere thinker on Jewish matters and in the wider world of spirituality. With this in mind, it is easy to forgive the book some of its shortcomings. For one, the work is not overtly Jewish. Michaelson quotes Hindu and Buddhist sources far more than traditional Jewish ones. The reader gets the impression that Michaelson is more comfortable in that world. Second, the book is organized in a way that does not help the reader access this difficult subject matter. Michaelson should have thought more about the arrangement of his materials. With that said, this is a grounded and beautiful work. Michaelson presents a picture of God, spirituality, and Jewishness which appealing, productive and humane.

I have not finished reading this book. The approach is radical and requires concentration and repeated readings, at least in my case. The book was suggested by my Rabbi after I mentioned another book, not yet published, on Shamanism - a book that I found most interesting. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is searching for God and who is not satisfied with the usual approaches provided by most organized religions.

This book is dense, deep, and thoughtful. It confronts many of the challenges that intelligent, well educated people have with the belief in G-d. It is also highly personal and shares the authors personal struggles with faith and how he resolves them. Not an easy read, but worth the effort. Tell your Rabbi to read it too!

very insightful with deep spiritual truths.

This was a great book.

I love this book and keep it close by. While watching TV I pick it up during commercials just to remain reminded that God is Everything. Thank you so much.

Jay Michaelson's writing is always clear, insightful, inspiring and informative. I have enjoyed other of his books and his columns for Huff Post, but this book is my favorite for pure spiritual inspiration and guidance.
