About the Author
SASHA DUERR is an artist and designer who works with organic dyes, alternative fibers, and the creative reuse of materials. She is a professor at the California College of the Arts with a joint appointment in textiles and fine arts. Sasha founded Permacouture Institute to encourage regenerative design exploration for fashion and textiles. Her work with plant-based dyes and ecological principles through local land-based sources and community has been featured in the New York Times, American Craft Magazine, Selvedge, and the Huffington Post. She is the author of The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes (Timber Press/Workman 2011).

Plants are beneficial for many different reasons.This book was super exciting for me to go through! I would love to spend a Saturday experimenting with different plants and dye clothing and fabric! The author explained things very thoroughly and provided pictures of each process. There was a lot of information to go through including colors for each season. The cover is beautifully made and a durable hardcover. It certainly is a beautiful book!I rate this book as 5 stars, I received this book for free from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.
I cross-referenced this book with another lovely natural dyeing book after the walnuts started falling in our yard last month and was so happy with both of them. This book was full of delicious photography and I loved the detailed instructions for someone who was literally starting from square one. It has opened up a whole new world for me creatively and I'm so thankful that Sasha has shared her extensive knowledge and creativity with the rest of us!
I loved that the author discusses water conservation and using invasive species and weeds in this book. The photography is absolutely beautiful and the subject matter inspiring.The one thing I wished was different was the lack of photos or examples for some of the projects / recommendations for botanical dyes. For example, passionflower, calendula, bougainvillea, wild fennel, and citrus peels are all mentioned as effective botanicals for dyeing, but the pages dedicated to those plants don't contain any photos of the color produced by them. There *is* a watercolor chart in the back of the book that attempts to replicate some of the colors that the plants produce, but based on how it represents some of the other plant dyes that I am familiar with, I'm not certain that the colors are completely accurate. (Not based on my own experience with plant dyes anyway - the colors in this palette don't seem entirely true to color to me.) It would have been nice to have had photo examples of fabrics that had actually been dyed with those plants.Overall, a really beautiful, inspiring book. Recommended for anyone who is interested in a more natural way to dye their favorite textiles.
I do like this book. Very pretty photography. I found all the most helpful information was in the back of the book. I wish it had more of a scientific feel to it, like wild colour and the modern natural dyer. This seemed like more of a picture book with one "project recipe" for each dye material. Wish it included information on modifiers and mordants and different fiber types
There are some interesting dye recipes and instructions here but the photographs are more artistic than instructive for most of the book and in the Kindle version at least, the photos are frequently very small.I wondered where the colour swatches were for the plants mentioned but they did appear later in the book. They should have accompanied each plant's chapter for best effect.All in all, if you look past the reminiscent, though not unpleasant, waffle, there is some very good information to be had. It just needs more explanatory photos of the dye processes.

Fantastic book. Beautifully written and put together, immensely helpful and insightful. She really open you up to some amazing possibilities. People like her are the reason I respect CCA so much as an art institute. I highly recommend this dye book to anyone interested in natural dyeing!
