Interesting insights into women with tremendous voices who have left a superb musical legacy for the world to enjoy.I wonder what the male equivalent for Diva is? Women who are demanding and seek perfection are called Divas and portrayed as difficult and self-obsessed, yet men who act the same way don't get called on it. Double standards?

With Soulful Divas, David Nathan - a true lover of r&B music - has compiled interviews with many of his favorite singers of the past 40 years. Some of the subjects, like that of the humorously raunchy Millie Jackson and the troubled Nina Simone, make for compelling reading. Most suffer from his endless fawning however. Take, for instance, Diana Ross. By all other accounts, Miss Ross is a difficult person, yet Nathan makes her out to be practically a saint.Nathan's frequent access to all of the top divas exposes the modern journalist's dilemma: if he fully captures his subjects in print, warts and all, he risks alienating them and being denied interview access to them in the future. Instead, Nathan fawns all over his subjects and gets repeat interviews with high-profile women who are often leery of the press (Aretha Franklin for one). Because of his "tactics", we are able to enjoy his many interviews in one setting (this book). Too bad most of his portraits don't penetrate the surface.

Not sure impressed with this book. My daughter LOVES the front cover but that he pictures throughout are not great photos. The information is good but photos are unappealing. A few of them I didn’t even know what the pic was.

good book for kids that want to learn more about whales

If you are considering purchasing this book now, keep in mind the book is pretty old at this point and this is reflected in the dated photos and content. Contains some misinformation, probably due to it's age but perhaps also a pro-captivity agenda. There are better options these days.

I bought this book based on reviews that the content is good. It is very informative. The photos however leave little to be desired. This is the age of cameras having 20+ megapixels. Being a Smithsonian book, I expected professional and crisp shots. The photos in this book look like they were taken on a point and shoot then blown up beyond an appropriate resolution. The pictures are blurry, pixelated, and just terrible. Even the front cover...so disappointing. Sending it back!

Great photography. The kids love to look at this book.

This is the fourth or fifth book I have read of Kerry Hamm and I have enjoyed them all. She is a hospital receptionist who tell stories about the people who come to the emergency room late at night or early morning. Thankfully, the names of patients have been changed to protect them from their stupidity. I find it kind of funny how the majority of potential patients expect to be seen in less than 20 minutes with the most trivial issues. As a young child I had to take my mother to a big city hospital where if you were seen in less than 12 hours. It was because of extensive bleeding, heart attacks, or you lost consciousness; so you can see I have very little sympathy for those for cake treat others with respect. She also tells some very sad stories and occasionally gives you suggestions for when you should come to the ER. I intend to read every one of her books.

Great stories! I'm so much more sympathetic to hospital workers now...Per the author's request, I have to point out a typo. In the chapter about the mom with the awful children, she says she doesn't sensor her children. Should read "censor"

I love all her books. I was surprised to read about the Prince fans but she managed to get that story in and get this available just 5 days after he died. I'm happy she writes these so fast so I can keep reading them!

I've read nearly every book Kerry has wrote and I can't even pick which is my favorite I mean who doesn't like humor and compassion all wrapped in one. My only thought Here in Ohio we have a saying. And granted it's about the weather. Only in Ohio can it be 80 today and snowing tomorrow basically . But in theses books there is new proof there's craziness well beyond the weather. Thanks for the stories and keep up the great work.

Another volume in Kerry's ER admittance series which perfectly matches my expectations. Proofreading appears to have improved. There is a good balance of smiles and frowns.

This is a funny books that teaches us what those in healthcare go through daily. My spouse is a RN and I have a new respect for her now
