Duncan's writing, his story telling, is wonderful. The book led me unknowing to the essence of the stories opening up a path for me to actually experience at least one of its purposes. Frankly, at the end of the book, I was amazed to find myself more than remembering lost memories only to realize that's exactly where I was supposed to be. What a surprise. His writing spoke to a part of me that has lived silently a very long time; it left me feeling fluid, alive, green and very, very happy..

I was worried about this one, but in the end, really enjoyed it. Maybe a bit predictable at parts, maybe a little unbelievable at others, but still a more than worthy read. Duncan does a great job of painting scenes and getting you invested. 4 stars!

Bought for a class, this book makes nonfiction writing interesting for those of us who would've never read the genre otherwise. It has a variety of themes, subjects, and settings, so there's a story for everyone to enjoy. My favorite is the one about sheep.

James David Duncan is a favorite author for both my wife & myself. Over the years this is one of my favorite gifts to give!

A collection of poignant stories, intriguing and entertaining. I was moved deeply by some (kept me awake and writing poetry late one night) and laughed aloud with others. David James Duncan's embrace of the natural elements - in rivers, trees, human experience - is expressed in ways that surprise and delight and inspire. Well done!

The lines between fiction and non-fiction can be thin, almost non-existent. That is the way these short stories that go from a person's youth to his mature years. Some of these stories are so close to the edge, I don't know if they are true or not, but all of them are entertaining.

I lived in Florida and he absolutely nails the way that people from elsewhere react to the crazy stuff that happens in Florida by saying "what is wrong with people down there? or how can you live there?" Trust me when I say that the same thought crosses the minds of most people particularly when a new arrival first becomes a resident, but after awhile the new Floridian just accepts the craziness as part of the deal made for living in south Florida with its mild climate and basically 360 plus days of nice weather -- barring an occasional hellish hurricane. The new residents even adapt to the mostly daily rainstorms and living in the lightening strike capital of the US. Dave's book is funny, witty, clever, and will make you laugh out loud in addition to making you smile when not laughing out loud. As a "Snow Bird", I have to agree with Mr. Barry. Florida is in its own orbit exhibiting a quirkiness that defies description. But when all is said and done, this odd shaped appendage at the bottom of the USA is great place to at least enjoy the winter solstice without fur lined boots & a snow shovel. I enjoyed every written word Mr. Barry so poetically places on each page regarding the great "Sunshine State." He did leave out a few quirks that we Yankees find unusual........I.e., the Kamakazi maneuvers by headless drivers in super market parking lots and the lifetime it takes for a traffic light to change. Anyone who enjoys humor, travelogues and the joys of living will certainly find this journey a delight!

Very cleverly written and many great recipes. I think the Lazy Lasagna for 1 is brilliant. I will admit that some of the recipes are more like two servings even though it says one in the book, but I almost like that better as I can take it to work the next day.I'm not a big fish eater, but even some of those look tempting so I will probably try them as well. I also like that each recipe doesn't have hundreds of ingredients that you need to purchase from some obscure store and they cost hundreds of dollars. Regular ingredients with easy to follow directions. I think it's one of the best cookbooks I've spent my money on. Highly recommended!

I bought this for my son who is a young single guy who loves to cook and is quite the gourmet. However, he doesn't have time to make the fancy meals he'd like. I liked that this book didn't seem to be talking down to guys ("This is how you boil water...) He really liked this book and says it's been very useful.

Too fancy and gourmet for most single guys

The book is very well written. It contains some humor, which is rare for a cookbook. The recipes are simple and quick to prepare. The 4 star rating is due to the lack of illustrations. Most of the recipes do not have any picture what so ever.

I bought this for my 21 year-old son who is cooking on his own for the first. He had asked for for several recipes but after he got this he did not want any of mine. He loves it and uses it.

Surprisingly many of the recipes are reasonably healthy. A few fit the sterotypical guy thing, but by and large this is a useful book.

This cookbook is well-written, clever, informative and thorough - explaining technique, equipment and basic supplies before delving into the recipes. I wish it had pictures - I think my sons would be more apt to use it if there were more illustrations to go along with the recipes. They won't have any idea if they're even close to what the expected outcome is without them.

Great book. It has some awesome recipes that I am sure my 20 year old, inexperienced with cooking, son can make. :)

This book added a dimension to our trip to Iceland that was very pleasurable. It shows how the Icelandic people carry the folklore of their country very proudly. Living Icelanders can connect real places on the island with the folkloric/historic Sagas, and they have been doing this since the Sagas were first transmitted. The stories and photos in the book really give a taste of how Icelanders love their land and heritage. It is written for pleasure reading, flipping between a tour guide, anecdotes and Sagas, very nicely. And not only do the photos show the real sites of the Sagas, they are also art in themselves.This book's coupling of storytelling and photography gives a sense of Icelandic history and values. Iceland is a very unique and special place. It's uniqueness is not entirely evident until we change the cultural lens through which we view a place we visit. This book successfully does just that.

Great photos that match the story of the sags. This is a wonderful history and overview of Iceland. I bought this book to prepare for my trip to Iceland. It was a great purchase! I feel more informed about the historical significance of the places and the founders of Iceland.

Love the general information but since it was published more than 20 years ago, some of the data is not relevant. The history, lore and sagas are interesting and gives a background to the island.

First, the good. This book, both text and photo, help the sagas come to life, as well as bring them to a new relevance regarding Iceland today. It's a valuable book in this regard, but little more can be said because the pictures and text have to be experienced to have this effect.On to the bad. While less than 1% of the land is inhabited, and while Iceland as a whole has a population of the same as a smallish city in the US, nearly every picture seems to be a picture of that 1% of inhabited and cultivated land. Moreover the text does not represent current thinking regarding the Sagas and is a bit dated (sagas are treated as purely historical).On the whole, this is a book worth owning if you like sagas and have never been to Iceland. Otherwise, I am not sure I'd recommend it.

I am passionate about Iceland. It is such a beautiful place and the photos of this book are beautiful but grainy. I know the book is older, but I wish the photos were clearer. The information is great, it talks about some of the most important Icelandic sagas, and the mysterious landscape of this weird, wonderful country.

For those who may never venture to Iceland, the duo of Krakauer and Roberts will give you a taste of the Icelandic culture, without the salt.While Krakauer captures the scenery, including salt cod drying in the open air, Roberts fills in the text with the myths and legends.Having recently returned from Iceland, I can attest that Krakauer's sumptuous photography truly depicts Iceland. Rugged peaks, sod houses, and the realm where glaciers and clouds meet are worthy additions to the book's visual feast.However, it should be noted that the best way to see these is to make the journey, too!

What a beautiful book! The artwork is stunning, and the introduction to the Sagas is fantastic. I highly recommend this to anyone visiting Iceland. It gives you great insight into the Icelandic culture and gives you fantastic photos to show your friends if your camera breaks while you are there.

The book is beautiful and is perfect for my intentions. Although it is a used book, it looks absolutely new. I am thrilled, especially since the book arrived so quickly from London.

I bought the kindle version of this book. I would definitely recommend the hardcover version. The first few chapters weren't that helpful but I found that as the book progressed it became more useful. It was a good resource for charting purposes (ie here are 10 abnormalities for this system and their general description). The pictures (and there were a lot of them) usually helped illustrate the abnormality. There were times that I felt the book went way to in-depth on certain aspects and other times where I felt it glossed over certain concepts or procedures that I wish it would have covered. All in all, I would give it 4/5 stars. Maybe not worth the $30 I paid for it, but if you could find a used copy for 10-20 it's worth the extra help.

A paramedic partner of mine recommended this series of books to me (he had the pathophysiology one), and after seeing his I immediately bought them all. I'm an EMT and don't actually have to know anything in this book, but I plan on medical school, so I read everything that'll give me a head start.The information is this book is presented with such incredible simplicity it puts every other textbook I've ever come across to shame. Providing visuals helps a lot, especially since some of them are utterly ridiculous and hilarious at 4AM on an ambulance. I learned more from this book than a lot of paramedics know about cardiology. I strongly recommend this one and all the others in the series to anyone at any level of healthcare.

Book is easy enough to follow - not as in depth as I would like it to have been and the "visual-ness" of it isn't too great either - sometimes there are just silly cartoons on the pages that don't have too much to do with the actual content. I bought this book as I'm starting out on a cardiac floor (RN) and for me it's just a basic overview with just OK visual aids.

Item arrived as described. Really enjoy reading this book. Very helpful in understanding the cardiovascular system. This book has awesome illustrations.

Easy to read and retain the information.

I have about books 10 from this series. I bought this one just to brush up on general cardiology knowledge when moving from the ICU to the Cardiac Cath Lab and it was quite helpful. I wouldn't have gotten through school without them. They are great for getting a solid overall view of a subject. Great for students.
