Max Weber (1864-1920), German sociologist, one of the founders of modern sociology. He emphasised cultural and political factors as key influences on economic development and individual behaviour. Weber argued for a scientific and value-free approach to research, yet highlighted the importance of meaning and consciousness in understanding social action. #73,660 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a classic book which was an attempt to look at the underlying reasons why the Protestant north of Europe and England became economic powerhouses and some became imperial powers (England and Holland). It looks at the importance of individualism and a change in how the individual viewed his/her relationship to the church and God. It is somewhat impressionistic and is at heart, a challenge to the reader to consider the role of religion in a culture and economy. Still an interesting approach and not entirely outdated. Anyone interested in eighteenth to early twentieth Europe should read it. Read it for a book club and we all had differing reactions.

This classic is more referred to than read by economists in Anglo-Saxon countries where Weber is considered mainly a sociologist. When I went to Graduate School (Wisconsin) it was not even mentioned. A pity, because it is a milestone in the search for explanations of historical events, in this case the extraordinary spread of capitalism in Protestant countries. Onemay not buy Weber's thesis in part or in toto, but it is so carefully argued that dissent has to be very nuanced and scholarly to be persuasive. (An example of such creative dissent is Tawney's "Religion and the Rise of Capitalism").This Edition contains a fairly good translation; its main weakness is the arrangement of notes (Editor's and Weber's) at the end of each chapter. Hard to find because tops of pages don't contain chapter titles. And the notes are an important part of the whole. The book also contains several of Weber's rebuttals to some citicisms that he received. Since these critiques are not reprinted here, the rebuttals are not fully self-explanatory. Moreover, this section is not inspiring for another reason: the tone of academic petulance diminishes the image of a great scholar.

Had to read for a class, but still good book

Printing is a bit crooked

a very good book

I can not believe I waited until I was 59 years old to read this book in its entirity. This is a clear, concise analysis of the cultural factors that created the "capitalist spirit" in general and in America specifically. Weber clearly analyses the belief systems of Protestantism that created the "Protestant Ethic" that compelled the protestant Americans to work hard, deligently attempting to earn capital and then to use that capital to further God's work here on earth. That wealth was not to be accumulated for personal consumption, but for further investment. Further investment meant more jobs, and a better life for others. In addition, profit was seen a God's blessing and was to be used by the individual to provide charity to those who were destitute. It is amazing how this culture is evident in our lives today, even among those who are no longer Christians. Look at Buffet, he does not live ostentatiously, he creates and accumulates capital, he is still working at his advanced age, he works constantly, and he has given away his profits to charity. This is an almost perfect example of the protestant ethic. Look at Ted Turner's work and charity. Poor old Ted does not understand the forces of the culture that motivate him, but he is being carried along by the current that has been handed down to us by our forefathers. The same can be said for the Gates and their foundation, working to provide charity to the people of the earth. The same can be said for the Mellons, Carnieges, and others of thier ilk. Work hard, it is a calling, it is important to create wealth, it is good to create wealth, and then provide charity with that wealth. That is the ethic, and Weber tells us how it happened, and why it happened exclusively in America.

Since I'd often seen this work cited in other writings (economics), I wanted to read it first hand. Glad I did.Weber himself was not taking sides religiously, just observing what he considered the facts of the case of the religious roots of America's booming capitalism, written when the US was emerging as a serious world power. Though by no means a deep dive into theology, Weber digs into an explanation of Protestant doctrine to make his point. Each reader will draw his own conclusions, but one cannot dispute the thoroughness and documentation of Weber's analysis. Not an easy read, but worth it if you want to better appreciate what made this country great.

Those considering buying the Kindle edition, just be aware most Greek phrases are rubbish, and that links only work for the editor/translator notes, and not for Weber's own notes - so it is extremely tedious to consult the author's extensive and important comments. This doesn't detract from the greatness of this text, and specifically the introduction and the included debates about The Protestant Ethic are a tremendous value. I just wish eBook quality was better.

Review

"This excellent, comprehensive work will be wonderful for classes and is also a good resource for researchers who want to explore different artistic approaches and their relationship to qualitative research. I plan to use it for both of these purposes. I highly recommend this book."--Carolyn S. Ellis, PhD, Department of Communication, University of South Florida "The topic of this book is timely. Arts-based qualitative methods have grown and evolved rapidly over the last decade, and this book gives a very good overview of the most popular approaches. Most arts-based researchers have expertise in only one area and tend to write in that domain. An overview such as this one, with the added examples at the end of each chapter, is a useful contribution to the field."--Lynn Butler-Kisber, EdD, Director, Centre for Educational Leadership, McGill University, Canada "Leavy effectively lays out the range of practices and potentialities for social scientists who are interested in adding arts-based approaches to their qualitative research practices. The book provides valuable jumping-off points for using innovative methods in the domains of narrative, poetry, music, performance, dance and movement, and visual arts. Instructors of qualitative methods courses across the social sciences would do well to add this resource to their libraries and course readings as a way of introducing senior undergraduate or entry-level graduate students to the invigorating possibilities made available when 'method meets art.' I would recommend the text for survey courses in qualitative methods and specialized courses in alternative or specifically arts-based approaches to research."--Monica Prendergast, PhD, Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences, Division of Creative Arts and Learning, Lesley University"This book seamlessly addresses fundamental questions about arts-based methods. It explores what arts-based methods are; their epistemological and theoretical foundations; the types of research questions for which they are suitable; how they are used to collect, analyze, interpret, and represent qualitative data; and how they can be evaluated. Leavy's engaging prose and examples convey the utility and beauty of arts-based methodologies."--Carol A. Bailey, PhD, Department of Sociology, Virginia Tech"Leavy's wonderful book provides a substantive and outstanding introduction to arts-based approaches in qualitative inquiry. Chapters on each of the major art forms include an elegant overview of the modality; key text, journal, and online references for additional information; and representative contributions by some of the leading writers in qualitative research. Method Meets Art makes a significant and, most important, pragmatic contribution to the emerging literature in arts-based inquiry. This volume is not just for artists: Leavy provides all social researchers and students an excellent resource for exploring the aesthetic paradigm and an evocative genre of qualitative research."--Johnny Saldaña, MFA, School of Theatre and Film, Arizona State University "An excellent introductory text for arts-based research (ABR). After nearly 90 years of debate about ABR and 35 years of controversy about its cousin, arts-based educational research (ABER), it is time for the arts as research to reside in the research methods classroom and in research proper....Leavy adeptly relates the most basic techniques in ABR—giving them away to students and researchers alike. In addition, she exceeds the introduction of techniques by presenting excellent examples of ABR research by experienced ABR methodologists. These elucidate ABR methods by showing students and beginning researchers what those methods 'look like' when done well....Leavy's book is generally superb....I greatly appreciate Leavy's adept handling of this introduction to ABR, showing that it is legitimate, useful, and authentic among research methodologies. I have taught research methods in behavioral science for over 15 years and will use Leavy's book alongside a traditional research methods text, next time around. It is an excellent resource for students, for beginning researchers, and for academicians in the arts, literature, and social and behavioral sciences." (PsycCRITIQUES 2008-08-01)"Her book is equally relevant to experienced researchers looking to synthesize their artistic and research interests, and students seeking to develop an understanding of innovative research practice. Of particular help for students is Leavy's succinct account of the positivist and paradigms, which she uses to contextualize arts-based research, and the 'Checklist of Considerations' and 'Discussion Questions and Activities' that feature in each chapter which ensure that the material, while academically challenging, is accessible to inexperienced researchers. Students and researchers alike will no doubt benefit from the extensive lists of suggested books, websites, and journals that accompany each chapter, and by creating individual chapters for narrative analysis, poetry, music, performance, dance and movement, and visual art, and by including within each chapter an exemplar of relevant published research, Leavy enables her readers to gain a sense of how a particular art form might suit their research needs and skills-set, while simultaneously validating each methodology and providing guidance over how specific research practice might be emulated." (Qualitative Research 2008-08-01)"I found the book interesting and one I believe will be useful for those wanting to embark on using a different approach to research....The 'discussion questions and activities' included in each of the chapters will promote thought and help students clarify their hopes and expectations of their chosen research method. Likewise the 'suggested annotated reading' and 'web sites and journals' at the end of each chapter signpost the student to where they might further explore their research options....For those practising counselling and psychotherapy, whether engaged in therapy and/or research and not familiar with using alternative methods of enabling people to capture experience I believe this book could offer fresh insights to support and further their endeavours." (Counselling and Psychotherapy Research 2008-08-01)"A breath of fresh air....The contribution of this book to the field of research method is invaluable not only because it is an oppositional effort to resist such a tendency of 'Déjà vu all over again,' but because there have not been any introductory books on arts-based research that we could recommend to graduate students who are interested in arts-based research....Leavy successfully establishes the legitimacy of arts-based research in social science research and succinctly explains how pivotal arts-based research is to the future of academic research. Leavy invites the reader to imagine a world of arts-based research alongside her, keeping the tone of a novel narrator rather than that of an epic narrator, encouraging the reader to an open dialogue rather than being conclusive and closed. In order to serve as an introductory book, Leavy offers readers reader-friendly, step-by-step description of six different genres of arts-based research: narrative inquiry, poetry, music, performance, dance, and visual art." (International Journal of Education and the Arts 2008-08-01)"Maybe [the] strange divide between art and science in research and especially qualitative research will begin to erode away as more readers find Patricia Leavy's new 2009 tome, Method Meets Art: Arts-Based Research Practice, and begin to realize that researchers conducting narrative, poetic, musical, performative, dance, and visual forms of inquiry employ rigorous methods of data collection, analysis, interpretation, and representation too. Consumers of Leavy's book should also find a comfortable introduction to these arts-based approaches and hopefully an invitation to try some of these methodological modes in research of their own. In her well-written and engaging work, Leavy carefully introduces the world of arts-based research by walking us through the paradigmatic contexts that have helped to shape this approach to inquiry as well as to establish the conflicting perspectives that hinder many to see these methods as being research at all. She also recounts the struggles with monolithic standards of quality in qualitative research and calls for a dialogue to continue regarding the aesthetics and pragmatics of research. By engaging in such conversation Leavy suggests we all could benefit from challenging our own comfort zones and begin to see that we can all learn from our colleagues regardless of the method being utilized....In reading Leavy's book I can now see that all forms of research can inform, perform, reform, and transform what we think we know about the world around as well as ourselves as researchers and readers." I used this book in a doctoral level course on critical autoethnography. The students loved the book! We discussed it in depth, and several students were inspired to use various arts-based methods in their final papers for the class. They intend to use these methods as they proceed with their dissertation research. They were captivated as the possibilities for presenting research findings in creative and interesting formats that allow them to write compelling accounts of working with marginalized communities. One of the students, Rebecca, said that the book gives her hope for being able to write "meaningful pieces that reach beyond the academy." Leavy's book presents the perfect blending of the arts and the sciences. Bravo, Patricia!

Fantastic overview of Arts Based Research. Leavy contextualizes ABR and includes a range of approaches within different art forms. It's been an amazing textbook for my research subject in my postgrad teaching course.

I am interested in the performative turn, and this is an excellent introduction. I have read other worksbyP.Leavyand she is a great writer on emergent methods and qualiatative research. I can really appreciate the intersection ofsocial science and art that she explains in this text.

Thank you very much. I cetainly will look forward to doing more business with you in the near future. Joan

Just what I needed to think more deeply about my ABER with Education Majors

I think a colleague I was talking about this book with most appropriately put into words how I feel about this work from Dr. Leavy - "Where has this book been all my life" my colleague exclaimed, and that is exactly how I feel. For many researchers, teachers, and public academics, methods represent an ongoing, often tense, conversation within and between fields throughout the arts and sciences. Rather than the binary distinction between arts and science preached by old school positivism and academics wedded to abstract notions of this or that type of knowledge as better or worse, more or less valid, and / or more or less useful in educating and speaking to broader public audiences, however, this book outlines (with citations and examples for use when encountering old school positivists and others obsessed with artificial boundaries) many ways artistic science and scientific arts can work in tandem with one another to both make information and knowledge more useful and accessible to broader audiences, and to capture the many aspects of the physical, social, and aesthetic world that do not fit so neatly into this or that arbitrary model. For anyone seeking to do arts-based-science or science-based-arts or both, this is a MUST READ, and a powerful example of some of the ways fluid approaches to knowledge, information, and education may go much farther than the hierarchical, binary obsessions of the past!

This book is an excellent text and resource for researchers and graduate students who are interested in arts-based research. A comprehensive review and in-depth exploration of why this new emerging methodology will meet the expectations and goals of contemporary research in education, social sciences, and other fields. Other some ABR books and papers offers views and perspectives on arts-based research from a single discipline, but Leavy offers a balanced and comprehensive overview of how researchers can ABR in the disciplines of arts, as well as offering a review of major exemplary works of arts-based research in the field. The first chapter provides an excellent overview of ABR, along with the last chapter discussing how to evaluate ABR and what we should expect from ABR. This book is my first choice to recommend anyone who is looking for expanding their research methods beyond traditional qualitative research methods.

I purchased and read Method Meets Arts while researching and writing my graduate thesis for my master’s degree. My area of concentration was the history of science, technology and medicine. Dr. Leavy’s work was an invaluable resource. Her introduction into arts-based research (ABR) methodologies helped me open the door to innovative ways to approach historical investigations. Yes, history as a field of study traditionally falls underneath the umbrella of the humanities, but it too is a branch of the social sciences. The arts are an underlining factor in both realms of study.Applying the ABR methodologies learned from MMA helped me establish interdisciplinary bridges between the academic worlds of history, art history, sociology and anthropology. Dr. Leavy’s work was so pivotal to my thesis that I mentioned her work in my prologue. I graduated from the Harvard Extension School in May 2016. My thesis was awarded the Director’s Prize for Outstanding Thesis in the Social Sciences! ABR helped me push beyond the traditional boundaries of scholarship and allowed me to infuse innovative approaches into my area of study.

What a great book. 8 years after it was published I bought it and I love it. There are 159 pages of gorgeous images and projects to do that have really opened my mind to the amazing possibilities of all kinds of felting. I have been needle felting and I am working on nuno felting but this covers all the fun stuff in between and also a part on needle felting. The projects are so fun and her instructions really are easy to follow. She doesn't just show you a gorgeous image then leave you hanging on how to accomplish it. I took some pics to show you because if you are like me, you really like to flip through a book before buying and these days that is getting way to hard to do. I wanted to go crazy and kind of did so there are quite a few images but I take 159 like I wanted to. I did take 12 images and apologize that the contents page had a horrible glare. I hope it helps I've you in your decision making process, personally I think if you like felting flowers or purses or journal covers than you need this book.

I own 8 felting books but if I had to give up 6 of them this is one of the keepers. Finally here is a book that doesn't insult one's aesthetic with cutesy projects that seem more suited to preteens. Instead the author showcases great designs with a very clear idea from start to finish of what you need for a project, what will be entailed to finish it and great photos all along the way. The basic technique given at the beginning will serve you through out the book and should be memorized - or copied, enlarged and put up on your wall until you have it committed to memory. The list of resources is fantastic - except there is no "Balfour Farm" as is listed. Another great felting book to have is "Feltmaking and Wool Magic" by Jorie Johnson, which is much more comprehensive but not as user friendly as the photos are small.

Thorough and complete in every category - this book on feltmaking will get everyone interested in felting to explore one or more of the ways to develop quality felt products. The projects provided in the book are great and tempting to do - perfect for those wanting to learn the subject. Plus the dynamic colors used in nearly every project add to the inspiration provided by the author. Get this book and maybe one more if you can only afford a few books on the subject...and remember, other authors may focus on one technique to the exclusion of others, while this author does not. So perhaps, choose this book first and then find another book, more advanced perhaps, in the felting technique you like best. But don't forget, this author includes some unique advanced projects to sink your felting activities into! Excellent!

I borrowed this book from a friend and started 2 of the projects (the purse and the bowl). I didn't finish yet and used the book and got it a bit messy so i bought a new one for the friend I borrowed it from. More pictures and more specific directions would have been nice. (What materials to use as templates and clearer pictures of netting. I bought hard plastic for the purse template then realized i needed to roll/agitate in the bamboo. Had to start over with a flexible template. Used old xray film.)

Good variety of projects and techniques. Covers everything I wanted to know about felting and then some. Found quite a few projects that I would actually like to make. This book has easy to follow step-by-step instructions and a lot of good ideas.

I own several felting books and this one is the best. The book offers step by step instructions and techniques for a beginner or advanced felter. Gillian gives us information on the history behind the wool process which I found very interesting and and never boring. I loved her simple instructions on the process of wet felting. Each page is so well photographed and the projects are so clear and colorful they jump right off the page and you become inspired immediately. A must have for anyone interesting in learning felting or in need of new inspiration.

I purchased this book not really knowing what to expect and what I got, to my surprise, was awesome! It's a well written book, beautifully photographed, with very nice inspiring projects. Super colorful! Great variety!! Ideal for all skill levels and the projects are categorized in the book that way. I always find that very helpful when trying to determine which project to attempt first. What a great book!! It's a keeper in my library! Not a moments regret here at all!

Can't say enough good things about this book!!! The projects are cute relevant useful and don't require a laundry list of supplies to complete. My one suggestion would be more step by step photos of the beginner and intermediate projects.

Review

"[Merkin narrates] with insight, grace and excruciating clarity, in exquisite and sometimes darkly humorous prose . . . For all its highly personal focus, [This Close to Happy] is an important addition to the literature of mental illness." ―Andrew Solomon, The New York Times Book Review (cover review)"I will not be the last to thank Ms. Merkin for resisting this desire [to die] long enough to give us what is one of the most accurate, and therefore most harrowing, accounts of depression to be written in the last century . . . Ms. Merkin speaks candidly and beautifully about aspects of the human condition that usually remain pointedly silent." ―John Kaag, Wall Street Journal"Wry, self-aware . . . a work of lacerating intelligence about a condition that intellect cannot heal." ―The New Yorker"[A] triumph on many levels . . . As insightful and beautifully written as it is brave . . . This Close to Happyearns a place among the canon of books on depression . . . books that offer comfort to fellow depressives and elucidation for those lucky enough to have dodged its scourge." ―Heller McAlpin, Washington Post"[A] stunning self-portrait." ―Christian Lorentzen, New York“A hybrid of memoir, case study, and confession, which joins such classics as Kay Redfield Jamison’s An Unquiet Mind and Andrew Solomon’s The Noonday Demon in the contemporary literature of depression. . . Merkin has written [a book] that will illuminate, challenge, and possibly even console.” ―Adam Kirsch, Tablet"[This Close to Happy is] a testament to Merkin's commitment to capturing the grim distortions that depression can produce. . . This Close to Happy is more than a memoir of mental illness. Merkin is a good writer―perceptive, provocative, relentlessly interrogative of her own experience―and despite her difficult subject matter, she does, in this memoir, what good writers do: she sends urgent, cogent dispatches from another world, a protracted battlefield that we might not otherwise know about." ―Lisa Fetchko, Los Angeles Review of Books"[A] compelling chronicle . . . Merkin's work is unique in describing the mundane burden of a deeply felt and closely observed life lived with depression . . . [H]er account of depression is both personal, literary and, at the same time, existential." ―Tom Teicholz, Forbes“Merkin is a wonderful writer whose keen eye for detail and human foibles enables her to brilliantly light her subject. . . . In page after page, she delivers elegant, evocative prose.” ―Psychology Today"This Close to Happy is as illuminating and hard to put down as it is painful." ―People "Merkin is a fine stylist . . . She has at her disposal wide-ranging allusions, and she draws on poetry with a charming ease, a frankness that assumes her reader’s sophistication, even as she capably holds the reader’s hand and clarifies the relevance of a particular reference.” ―Forward"Daphne Merkin exhibits shocking honesty in allowing readers to look into her journey. . . Her depth of writing experience on the topic comes through in emotion-packed prose . . . This book offers the education necessary for readers need to follow depression as it rises and falls in one woman’s life, as well as in the lives of thousands of others." ―Wyatt Massey, America Magazine“Merkin’s deeply intimate account of living with clinical depression is illuminating, heartbreaking, and powerfully written. With lively prose and shrewd observations . . . Merkin’s exploration into her complicated yet unconditional devotion to her mother is rendered with compassion and profound perception. Merkin eloquently blends the personal with the researched; her intellectual tenacity and emotional rawness impress as much as they entertain. This book is a wonderful addition to literature about the unrelenting battle against depression.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Dark thoughts hover over virtually every page of this mesmerizing memoir, and yet there is also the very real possibility of hope. . . Merkin’s exceptional book belongs on the same shelf as such classics as William Styron’s Darkness Visible (1990) and Kay Redfield Jamison’s An Unquiet Mind (1995).” ―Booklist (starred review)“[Merkin] has a signature method to her writing, one that exuberantly crosshatches high- and lowbrow, and one that reveals and protects in equal measure.” ―Bookforum “Opening This Close to Happy was like getting a long letter from my best friend at sleepaway camp. I had no idea it was this bad for you, was my first thought, and then, we have both been so paralyzed by grief. This is why we all feel so lonely right now―the longing, the depression, the comedy of it all, wrapped up in a story about sex and Judaism, our mothers. I felt so whole when snuggling up alone with Merkin’s brilliant, full-of-feeling masterpiece. I flew through it and hated to let go when it ended.” ―Jill Soloway“Fierce, clear-eyed, and beautifully honest, Daphne Merkin’s is an essential voice. This Close to Happy, a lucid and elegantly written account of her lifelong struggles withdepression, unsettles and illuminates in equal measure. This is an important book.” ―Claire Messud“If the face presented to the world is a mask to protect ourselves, Daphne Merkin bravely removes hers, revealing the truth of herself, courageously exploring, seeking―and sometimes even finding―the hope that glimmers at the end of the tunnel. Please read as soon as possible.” ―Gloria Vanderbilt“This beautifully written tale of Daphne Merkin’s depressive demons is by far the most accurate and human account of depression and its impact that I have ever read. I highly recommend it, both to those in the mental health professions and to those who care about the suffering of their loved ones.” ―Glen O. Gabbard, M.D.“The greatness of this book is in the way Merkin takes the measure of the adversary.” ―Peter Sacks“D. W. Winnicott wrote that depression is the fog over the battlefield. In this extraordinarily lucid and moving book, Daphne Merkin illuminates the dark and desperate battle that depression can be. This is a book for all those who know nothing about depression and for those who know too much.” ―Adam Phillips “This Close to Happy belongs on the shelf with William Styron's Darkness, Visible and Andrew Solomon's The Noonday Demon. It brings a stunningly perceptive voice to the forefront of the conversation about depression, one that is both reassuring and revelatory.” ―Carol Gilligan, author of In a Different Voice"This Close to Happy is honest, fearless in the way we have come to expect from Daphne Merkin, and, as a bonus, frankly informative. From Merkin we get the inside view of navigating a chronic psychiatric illness to a realistic outcome. As she writes, 'the opposite of depression is not a state of unimaginable happiness, but a state of relative all-right-ness.' For some, that insight alone will speak volumes. Her candor discussing the fears, tribulations, and triumphs of a lifetime of treatment will be valuable for anyone who loves someone with depression but makes necessary reading for the mental health professionals on the other side of the couch." ―Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., President, Child Mind Institute

Brilliant, scathing, heartbreaking and raw. This is the most powerfully honest book on depression and child abuse that I have ever read. Merkin's bereft childhood of brutality and lack seems to be the fertile ground that created her despondency and the tenacious, pervasive longing for suicide. Her parents appear blatantly psychologically disordered, meting out damage as casually as one would order lunch. Merkin is by turns, attached to, and repelled by, a vicious mother, who seems both stunningly narcissistic and psychopathic. I was frustrated by Merkin's struggle to detach from her mother, much in the same way that abused wives return to their abusers, expecting different outcomes. Merkin was drowning in depression, yet repeatedly returned to her parents seeking solace, approval and a revisionist history that neither parent was emotionally equipped to provide. The repeated returns to the abusive environment only seemed to exacerbate the depression and parental control, all in a continuous self-perpetuating loop. I rooted for Merkin to cut the toxic ties in favor of mental health and self actualization, but her journey to contentment was more circuitous. I applaud Merkin's ability to craft riveting and beautiful prose from the wreckage and horror of her early years. This book is both difficult to read at times, and equally hard to put down. My hope is that Merkin never chooses to succumb to the lure of suicide, but instead continues to write, to enjoy simple pleasures and allows herself to heal. A highly recommended read.

I quite loved Merkin's literary asides, I am a reader as well. This book definely brought me into depression, a mood disorder I don't happen to have but the writing here is somehow contagious. I didn't mind that terrible feeling as it lifted when I finished the book. Merkin's strength here is showing in blazingly purposeful detail: The parents, the other kids, and her childhood. If one image stands out for me it is of her Jewish mother drawing Nazi imagery on her arms. I mean, these parents should have been fined, in my honest opinion. My confusion lies in how do the author become happier? Was it the pain pills she mentions. Or the small home on Long Island that she rents, or was it having the energy to have friends visit? Her daughter's love? Her love for her daughter? I am sure all those helped but the leap from abject misery to 'close to happy' wasn't clear to me and so must affect many depressives looking for concrete answers. Merkins writes so well but what she left out is telling. 4 big stars

I read this while severely depressed and found it helpful. This isn't the point of the book—it's a beautifully-written, insightful, firsthand account of someone's lifelong struggle with depression—but as I imagine a large number of people who pick up this book will, like me, be looking for some insight into their own situation, I'll say that I, for one, found some. I, like Daphne, sometimes struggle to accept depression as an illness as opposed to a personal failing, even as I live it, and reading someone else's honest account—experiencing empathy and finding many shared experiences along the way—encouraged me to be a bit kinder to myself.

I'm not quite sure what the author was trying to do as the text jumped between battling depression and her unhappy childhood without getting to a point. I'm not sure there is a there there to this story or why this author's story was chosen.

I purchased this book because I was in a deep clinical depression - a battle I - like the author - have fought since childhood. Reading how others - especially fellow authors - manage their depression is usually insightful and helpful to me.Sadly, this book did nothing to help me to cope with my bout with depression. In fact, it just made it worse, exacerbated by the fact that I had wasted money on this book. Like the other one-star reviewers, I needed to skip ahead - a LOT.Merkin's style of writing might be okay for a New Yorker article. But slogging through nearly 300 pages about emotions written in a journalistic style is too much for this reader. And the psychiatrists Merkin saw certainly did not help her to put her childhood behind her. Sixtysomething is way to old to still be blaming one's parents.

This memoir is the most moving, brave and brilliant book I have ever read about depression. Heartbreaking and harrowing, THIS CLOSE TO HAPPY, A Reckoning with Depression is, remarkably, empty of any bitterness. There are moments of aching tenderness: climbing on her mother's lap as she (her mother) sang in a beautiful voice to the children on the one night a week she put them to bed; waiting by the elevator for her mother to visit at the hospital; an impossible longing for mother love. Daphne Merkin dazzles with her intelligence, wry humor and honesty. A hugely important book for anyone who knows the pain of depression, described with great precision and understanding, or who has a friend of family member going through the hell of depression.

It was riveting and disturbing and beautifully written. I felt very close to her and then a little impatient and wanted to fix her and give her some suggestions, like quit already with the Freudian analysis and try some cognitive techniques. But then I'm worried about her and not objectively observing her writing. Definitely pulled me in, argued wit her that my mother was worse. I would have liked to get closer in to her mind set when she was in the depths of depression,,what sort of thoughts, and I thought she left that kind of vague.Beautiful book, had to be so hard to write, but rewarding.

One of the three best personal descriptions of serious mood disorders for the lay public and professionals (Styron's "Darkness Visible", and K. Redfield-Jamison's "An Unquiet Mind" are the others). A must read for those who suffer from severe depression, or bipolar disorder, their friends, family, and mental health professionals who treat them.

It took about 5 minutes each to read the ones I was immediately interested in. It was very readable and to the point. There may be more detail in the Wikipedia summaries for each of the plays. However, somehow I like this.

It was helpful for an online class I took.

Nice little book.

I was familiar with the play from my university days. Excellent little pocket size book.

I was surprised by the size, though totally pleased otherwise. Listing the dimensions would have alleviated the surprise.

Perfect little stocking stuffer for English majors.

The greatest writer of all time, William Shakespeare works have lasted the test of time. But the problem I have is that I forget the story lines. This perfect pocket size resource will come to the rescue. It covers his entire body of work and also list details pertinent to the story. I have come to depend on this book before I go to see a work or when I need a refresher course on a discussion. The Bard ‘s 38 comedies, tragedies, and histories are contained in this mini-digest. This work is a plus for anyone on the go or wanted to become a Shakespearian scholar.

This is a lovely book to have! While it's thick, it fits in your palm and is filled with information. It's good as a collectible or small book library, but even better as a quick reference when you need to look up a character, plot-line, or other fact in a hurry! Great for actors, directors, scholars, students, and teachers! Definitely recommend this.
