.....still "reviewing" the book as I've recently purchased several on Mapplethorpe including the movie CD of his life with Sam Wagstaff. I did view the movie which I also recommend having. It just helps explain the man....actually both men to some degree. Mapplethorpe was a complicated man....or so it seems through the eyes of books about him and of course his photography. If you're a collector of all things Mapplethorpe this is one for the collection.

Great overview of his entire artistic output. Partnered with some great essays on his key eras.

The author has a number of pieces written over the course of over a decade, and loosely assembled them into a topic-oriented structure. While this may seem haphazard and not helpful in terms of instruction, I found that the format, and most importantly the content, of this book was incredibly helpful and instructive as to the lifestyle and mental makeup it requires to be a Product Manager. The title of this book is prophetic, as the author does not deal with step by step processes so much as describing various situations that arise, and the mindset that is required to properly, and productively deal with them. This is far more Art than Science, though by the end of the book, you will feel you know more about being a Product Manager than any textbook or formulaic plan could ever give you. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Product Management, both novice and expert, without hesitation.Colm Shalvey

Let me begin by stating that I am not a novice baker. This is an adorable looking little book. I wanted to love it. I have been a fan of Alice Waters for many years and I love the Little Bookroom format .The photographs are lovely, the paper is very nice quality.The issue of it being titled “ Biscotti ” has been addressed by so many people that I will not weigh in on it.To begin, many of the ingredients within the recipes are not pantry items for most Biscotti /cookie bakers in the U.S. (In addition, several of the recipes call for bitter almonds which the recipes acknowledge are not available in the States. It is suggested that apricot or peach kernels be substituted for the bitter almonds. It is my understanding that peach kernels are poisonous since they also contain cyanide. I may be incorrect about that. Anyway, I could not find them. Organic apricot kernels are available from Amazon for about $15.98 for ½ lb.)I have baked my way through only five (5) of the recipes within the book. The Cantucci di Prato and the Tozzetti Alle Nocciole were delicious and very “pure” tasting. I did need to adjust cooking temperature and cooking time (which the book does caution may be necessary) and I did not permit the logs to cool completely before slicing. (Too many crumbed logs under my belt to follow that advice.)The dough for Biscotti Regina, when made as directed, would not hold together for me. I was able to save the dough by adding a small splash of ice water but I feel this or some other ingredient/instruction should have been included within the recipe for this contingency. I went over the ingredients and instructions innumerable times. It certainly could have been something I did incorrectly but this really is not a complex recipe and it should have come together easily.The coup came with the Biscotti di Miele. This recipe, for me, was totally unworkable.. The recipe cautions that you may need to “knead in” the last cup of flour by hand. With two and one half cups of flour remaining to be added, the dough was so stiff that I was afraid I would break my mixer (one of those older indestructible K5A Kitchenaid mixers). I switched to the dough hook. That permitted me to incorporate an additional half cup of flour. I drafted my husband to attempt to knead in the remaining flour. The dough was far to stiff for any additional flour to be added. Once again I reviewed the ingredients and instructions and to the best of my knowledge I did not leave out/add anything not required and I followed the directions.( I should have known better when I saw the texture of the honey with the sugar dissolved in it but I assumed the authors knew better than I did.)I began re-reading some of the recipes which I had not made. Several of them seemed as though they would yield very stiff (perhaps unworkable) dough. At this juncture, most probably, I will not use these recipes again. I will look forward to someone telling me that they have had good luck with particular recipes. As it is I find this to be a delightfully written book but one which should not be utilized as a recipe book for biscotti.Regretfully, I am giving it two stars but I would have liked to give it 2 1/2 . (I have not discussed the Cantucci Di Noci E Cannella. The recipe worked.). I am of the opinion that more time should have been spent in “testing” these recipes for the non-professional kitchen. It really is a very frustrating experience to waste time and ingredients (expensive ones).

As for the negative review because the book contains no "biscotti" recipes, the reviewer is correct. This book has no "biscotti" or what we Americans have come to know as biscotti recipes.Just as Italian grandmothers tend to refer to all long, strand pasta as spaghetti, this book refers to crisp cookies as biscotti. If you are looking for a lovely book to add to your collection, please consider this one. The pictures are charming and the recipe selection is perfect - a little bit of everything. There are no ooey-gooey chocolate brownie type sweets, but the kind of cookies you can mail, share and keep in a cookie jar to enjoy days later with tea or coffee. If you like walnuts, pictachios or pine nuts, this book is for you. I LOVE it.

Too many non-Italian recipes. I don’t expect or want to find recipes for peanut butter cookies or snickerdoodles in a cookbook called Biscotti.

Wonderful recipes, from basic to slightly complicated. If you like Italian cookies, I highly recommend this book!

You can breeze through this instructional brief in one sitting, making it suitable for a student with a very busy schedule like me. Decent content, but the author only devotes a part of one page to Dark Skies, which is a disappointment. He does far enough into passive and active building designs to allow good conversation at an architect's dinner party, but not much had science.Worth a read, even if you're not a student.

This is not a book written from a hard core environmentalist philosophy but a very practical and pragmatic approach to designing, building and living in an environment which contains a limited amount of resource. With this in mind Bergman focuses on sustainability as an underlying philosophy behind all design, material and construction decisions and rethinking our entire life strategies in a very positive and optimistic way showing how the future is full of hope and possibilities, this is not a doom and gloom shock story like "An Inconvenient Truth".While the target audience is architectural professionals and students this book will appeal to anybody who wants to get below the surface veneer of fashionable environmentalism and look at effective ways of dealing with these critical issues.

While this little book is aimed at architectural students and professionals, I presume, it is of considerable interest to the involved layman who is concerned about the environment and interested in architecture and design. I really recommend it, though some may be put of by the concentration towards those who will actually be planning and designing our future.

This book is a fair introduction into the world of Sustainable Design, for those considering delving into that field either professionally or otherwise. I think it is less than 100 pages, with lots of pictures and diagrams to maintain interest. Would make a nice gift for someone interested in "green" things in the modern age.

Needed it for school. Intuitive and enlightening, learned a lot out of this book.

Concise and practical book. Highly recommended for any student and researcher on the subject.

Its good presentation but it need more technical data base with that there are some data base for sustainable design researcher .

Good General read for those who want to read more about green architectural design.

This book should be considered a must-read for any safety conscious kayaker. The way it's laid out is it takes real world kayaking incidents, tells the story of what happened, then outlines what went wrong and why, and what could have been done to avoid the incident. I find when I'm out kayaking, and a minor thing goes wrong, I think about what I've read in this book and realize that ignoring minor things can add up to "Deep Trouble!"I kayak mainly in the Pacific Ocean, with small groups of varying experience, on mild to moderate days; I don't kayak in severe weather conditions, but even on a calm day, unexpected things can go wrong and it's nice to have the additional knowledge to analyze the situation and make better decisions.

I am not sure the words "enjoyed this book" would be the correct way to phrase things, but I found the information very interesting indeed. The reports have prompted some very constructive talks between our group of kayakers and some rethinking of usual routines and boat/equipment packing. The problems faced by some are easy to relate to, and very easy to see how even a "well organized trip' can go awry so very quickly.Personally I found the book layout annoying, whilst I think it works on the page size of a magazine I found that cramming in the sidebars on such a small page size distracting, and made the continuity of reading confusing, hard to relate to a sidebar when you have not read the full account. With this layout the book requires the reader to go back an forth over several pages to read everything, not the way I like to read a book. In a magazine layout you could easily read through the account and glance over to the appropriate sidebar without having to search or reread each sidebar, whereas the book required more page turning and searching, not a huge obstacle or task in itself but none the less annoying. The information in this book is extremely useful and is worthy of a second or third read more reference than story which I think makes the layout so much more important.

I learned a lot from this book. Vignettes on sea kayaking mishaps that I was able to learn from. I was surprised at how many of the accidents involved kayakers not wearing a PFD or dry-suit. The discussions on currents, tides, and winds was useful to me, although even more in this area would be appreciated. Hindsight is always clearer, however reading through the accidents showed me how group dynamics in the outdoors comes into play in different ways, and how quickly things can go wrong. I started to highlight the words "did not wear a PFD", "had a PFD stored in the boat", "no flotation", "no wetsuit or drysuit", etc. quite a bit. That was a common theme. However, seeing how these unfortunate kayakers sometimes survived from that point on was useful to me.

I recently took several ACA courses in kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico. My instructor (Hank Baltar in Gulfport, MS - I HIGHLY recommend him!) spoke about a handful of books, this being one of them. I bought it and once I started reading it, I found it hard to put down. The real life accounts of harrowing kayak rescues / disasters were very eye opening for me. This book does a great job showing how naive novices can be, as well as how a seasoned kayaker can underestimate their conditions. The general theme of the book is; BE PREPARED! Thanks to Hank, and in part to this book, I consider myself much more safety conscious when on the water.

Reading this gives one perspective on what can happen if you are not careful or become complacent.I think this book as well as its sucessor 'Sea Kayaker's More Deep Trouble' are must reads if you are a kayaker or canoeist.

I learned many lessons from this book and the subsequent title ("More Deep Trouble"), but the one that absolutely sticks in my mind is: If you don't have it on you, you don't have it.Wonderful books, but frustrating in a way because I cannot understand why any paddler would NOT wear a PFD. Some paid with their lives for that error in judgment.I'll re-read the "Deep Trouble" books because the writing is excellent, as are the lessons - as sad as some make me.

If you are new to kayaking on open water and have dreams about coastal paddling, you have to read this book! The concept is absolutely great!The author collected a bunch of stories of kayaking accidents that all happened in the Pacific NorthWest, put them in a single volume and supplemented the stories with expert commentary on what went wrong and what could have been done differently.Implementation is also very good. The book is well written, easy to read and the commentaries are very useful.The book has limitations. First, only Pacific NorthWest is covered. Lessons learned are widely generalizable but there are potential troubles that are not covered in this book at all. Commentary gets repetitive after a while and you don't even need to be an expert paddler well familiar with sea kayaking safety to get to the point where this book does not have much to offer. Even then, the stories have enough entertainment value to keep you interested even if you don't actually learn anything new or useful.

Lots of really good information and advice hidden in the stories about kayakers who either got into conditions beyond their capabilities or rescued someone who was in trouble. I would highly recommend that if your thinking about getting into Kayaking, especially long distance "sea" or touring style kayaking, and even for white water or river kayaking, you should read this first. A common theme will develop as you read the stories and it will make you a better paddler if you take the warning the common theme gives you as well as adapting proper safety and emergency mindset, this book will show that even experienced, and highly experienced kayakers could get in over their head or into "deep trouble!"
