From Publishers Weekly

When Los Angeles comedian and television writer and producer Wilder-Taylor got pregnant, she feared undergoing this process: "a perfectly sane woman who swigs Jack Daniel's, never goes to sleep before eight a.m., and has had at least one STD gives birth and suddenly becomes a different person... [who] subscribes to three dozen parenting magazines, thinks a wild night is tossing back two O'Doul's, and never hits the hay after eight p.m." Of course, now that the author has a daughter, she's smitten; the child "grew on me every day, and by six months I was definitely her bitch." Hoping to be the voice of reason amid a cacophony of parenting advice (in the form of books, mothers-in-law and others), Wilder-Taylor dishes on sharing the parenting responsibilities with your husband ("I felt like saying, 'Didn't you get the memo? WE'RE PARENTS NOW! LOOK ALIVE!' "), breast feeding ("it hurts like a rhesus monkey biting your nipples"), meeting other new mothers (only they can answer questions like "How the f*** does this Diaper Genie work?") and other aspects of new parenthood. Crass but reassuring, Wilder-Taylor succeeds in putting fears at rest. (Apr.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

As an admittedly easy-going and reasonable Mom-to-be I found the book depressing and eventually stopped reading it. While I empathize with the author and many of her reflections on and struggles of the early motherhood are not all that foreign to me, the book had made me feel anxious and upset. I think it might have been a better fit for a mother in the process of dealing with the issues mentioned in the book rather than an expectant mother such as myself.

I loved this book! As a professional nanny working in Los Angeles, I could relate to the cross section of crazies that the author talked about. I liked her funny take on the usually serious job of parenting. I will read all of her other books for sure, though this book was written several years ago, it still stands current. Thank you Stefanie Wilder-Taylor for your literary contribution!

I read some of the one-star reviews and hey, everyone has a right to their opinion and thanks amazon for giving us the venue to vent and to applaud.I ordered this book for research on a writing project since my kids are now in their twenties and I needed updating. While it may not help a new mom who is SERIOUS (about being serious about being an educated and informed wonderfully loving mother)...this book is a FABULOUS companion piece that will help her NOT BE SO SERIOUS.It is irreverent (like Annie Lamott's "Operating Instructions", it makes fun of stuff I've done and stuff I've watched others do and wondered, "are they right and I'm wrong...or I'm right and they're wrong". I completely get Wilder-Taylor's love and devotion for her daughter (just like Lamott's for her Sam). They just know how to also be FUNNY!I wish I had both of these books when my boys were babies!I have been laughing out loud -- so much so that my husband hunts me down to make sure I'm okay. Bravo Stefanie Wilder-Taylor!You have offered A LOT of really practical, relevant, honest and thoughtful information here. AND YOU'RE FUNNY.I don't see that you're being judgmental at all. If anything, I'm getting over and over again that your bottom line is: there is no ONE way and we all find our own way in this new mom adventure. (and we're still learning)I'm ordering a copy right now for a new mom of a one-month old because you share the truth and you make us laugh. And she will feel relieved that she can pick up your book - randomly open to any page - and receive HELP along with LAUGHTER. Both count!

I tried. I really did. I got all the way to chapter 5 before seeing if I could get a refund. According to this book I need to kill myself because my dresser and crib match, and the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) is wrong in telling you that bumpers and blankets are bad for cribs. Who cares if your kid gets his face smothered, at least his crib won't look like a prision is what the autoher says.

Not a very helpful book, though I didn’t really expect it to be. Not as much fun to read as I hoped, a little bit arrogant and laced with dangerous, lazy advice (seriously, blankets in the crib?). A lot of judgmental rants throughout and towards the end.

I loved this book. I only wish I had read it before I gave birth. It's hard to weed through mommy books, well meaning yet unsolicited advice, and your own instincts. At the end of the day I felt like a mom failure until I realized there are a lot of crazies and my instincts and decisions are better than 99% of what I heard or read. This book is completely true and a great read for the mom to be or the new mom. Highly recommended!!

I just received this book. Its for my sister, a new mommy to be. I read through it a bit and enjoy the sense of humor. I want to keep it to read first, lol. I think she's really going to enjoy it. I had to scour the internet to find a book for her that wasn't one of those typical preachy "do or die" baby books, which I'm sure she'll receive plenty off. This should be a nice reprieve in the midst of her upcoming (happy)madness.

Stephanie doesn't cease to amaze and bring the "REAL" to real parenting. Easy to read and relate to if even if you aren't a parent yet. You've seen the some of the situations depicted in this and maybe have been in it yourself. A laugh out loud comforting look into the ups down of parenting and all that it entails.
