My daughter all of a sudden developed a fear of throwing up at school, after she saw someone else throw up at school. Obviously throwing up is never any fun, but my daughter was so worried about this potentially happening to her that she was trying to get out of going to school. Her classroom teacher recommended this book and it was very helpful! It showed her that we all get sick from time to time, but, even if that happens at school, it's not a big deal. We recover and move on. Talking and reading about her fear made my daughter realize that she's worried for no good reason and that she's better off not worrying about it in the first place. :)

Sometimes You Barf is a wonderfully crafted picture book that will go far in allaying all those fears young children have when it comes to throwing up. It's easy to forget what a traumatic experience it is that first time, and Carlson tackles the subject with humor and a matter of fact presentation that makes this book a must read for young children who have faced the dreaded flu bug, and also those who have yet to experience the trauma of "barfing."This is a real feel good treatment of a very gross topic! I loved that the author chose to point out that even though you barfed on your math test, nobody at school is going to be mad at you, and they will all welcome you back when you feel better. I wish I would have had this book when my then first grade son was so totally mortified to have thrown up at school. It would have been so helpful!Carlson emphasizes the fact that this is something that everyone does, and that the good thing is you get better! Her expressive characters add charm to the story, and her effective use of color (especially green) makes this book a visual treat. How often do you get to share a laugh or two and impart some valuable information? This should be a must have for any classroom collection, or for any young preschool to elementary age student experiencing anxiety about the upcoming flu season. A timely treat.
