I absolutely love this book! I have read it at Christmas time almost every year for the last 40 years. It is such a good reminder of what Christmas is truly about. It may be a novel, but it is based on cultural research and it makes Mary and Joseph come to life. The shame her pregnancy caused, because who would really understand and believe the true story. It also brings to mind that Mary knew, right from the very beginning, how it would end. The same Scriptures that spoke of His birth, also spoke of His death on the cross. As she looked in that tiny baby's face, she knew. And she and Joseph still raised him and loved him and taught him the things he needed to learn growing up. But the impact of realizing the burden they carried , it put a whole new light on the birth of Christ.
Love how Marjory Holmes make the story of the First Christmas come alive. I have had this for many years but bought this one because my future daughter-in-law is attending RCIA to become a Catholic before she and my son get married. I wanted her to read this. It makes Joseph and especially Mary, so real and relatable.
I read this story every Christmas to put into perspective why this holiday is so important. It is a beautiful love story that makes the nativity narrative real for me. I think Marjorie Holmes was divinely inspired when she penned this novel. Her descriptions of everyday life at the time Jesus was born make me feel a part of the community and a part of the miracle. I bought a paperback edition of the book in 1990, replaced it with a hardback edition when the paperback was falling apart, and purchased the kindle edition as soon as it was available. I look forward to reading it every holiday season.
I loved the Christmas story as told through the eyes of Mary, Joseph, both their parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth. It brought to life the emotions of each as they struggled to accept the prophecy being fulfilled right before their eyes. We still today search and pray so hard for something that we miss it, when God delivers.
One of my all-time favorite books. I re-read it often. Many years ago, this book was my first experience with fiction based on Bible events. It is a fictional story based on Mary and Joseph and events leading up to the birth of Jesus. The language is a little stiff by more modern standards, but it is worth the effort in my opinion. I'm sure a serious historian could rip the details apart, but that would not destroy my enjoyment of this book. It is a well-told story and after reading it, I have never celebrated Christmas quite the same way. The book made the story come alive for me in a whole new way. A must read for teen girls and their moms.
I first read this book 40 years ago when I was about to give birth to my first child. This book has forever changed my perception of the Christmas story. Mary and Joseph were real people struggling to accept their roles in life just as each of us do.
I have heard or read the story of Jesus’ birth for over 70 years. This one offers so much insight to what Mary and Joseph went through to bring Jesus to us. They overcame so many challenges. I will never think of Jesus’ birth the same.God bless you, Mary Colmes
Although the author cautions from the beginning of the book that this is just a book of fiction, you can't help but think, "It could have happened like this." The story is a fictional account of Mary from the day she "becomes a woman" until just after she gives birth to Jesus. I think this is a wonderful book and one that every Christian should read at least once (I try to read it every Christmas, although I don't always make it) along with it's two sequals, Three From Galilee and The Messiah. The old familiar stories, heard from childhood in countless Sunday Schools, comes alive in a whole new way. You see exactly what each of the characters actually gave up. It becomes a story of a young girl, called to do extraordinary things, while those around her mostly believe that she has done wrong. And Marjorie Holmes has a great gift; the characters in her book seem so real you almost believe that it HAD to have happened that way and with those people. This is not a "preachy" book, really. It's a great book about a young girl called to a great role in history and how she and those who loved her lived through it.
