I bought this book on impulse, thinking about my grandmother speaking French to me as a child. I wanted to see if I could regain the fluency I lost when she passed and I stopped needing it. I am so glad I followed the impulse though, because this is a pretty marvelous book, especially for someone like me. The audio in particular was especially helpful because it brought back the conversational French I knew, while connecting it to the formal knowledge of the language that I never had. It was interesting to read the vocabulary and verify or correct my understanding of words, and it was exciting to learn new words in French for the first time in 20 years. I think my grandmother would be pleased to know I am using her native language again and would be proud of me learning more. I don’t know if this book would be the best choice if you are preparing to move to France, but for the casual learner, this is just about perfect.
Having just taken French language courses during high school, I would consider myself at a beginner level. "Learn French with Stories for Beginners" was an easy read that helped me increase my French skills with descriptive text followed by translation for new and unfamiliar words. I found the included audio to be most helpful because I was reminded on how to properly pronounce each word. Compared to other ebooks in this category, I find audio to be essential. This book is great for those working towards increasing their beginner level French to conversational or intermediate level. I look forward to reading the other books in Frederic Bibard's series.
I appreciated how this book was laid out. There were 15 stories total. Each section presented a paragraph or two of the story with the new vocabulary words bolded, and then it defined the bolded terms underneath the paragraph in which they were used. This made learning the new vocab feel more natural, as opposed to just reading a dictionary of a new language. I also think all the vocabulary introduced were terms that are actually useful in everyday life as well as travel.The ebook also came with a free audio portion that you can download separately. Normally you have to pay extra for that, which was pretty cool. Also, because it was an ebook, you could easily go to the table of contents and click on a section you wanted to look at again, say if you were mostly interested in words about vacations.I speak extremely little French myself, I only know little phrases I picked up that my grandmother taught me as a child. But, if I had a more basic or even beginning understanding of the language, this book would definitely help me improve.
As a student of the French language I am always looking for good resources that are easy to understand, engaging, and informative. This book helps greatly in that respect. It is written entirely in French aside from a brief introduction and the vocabulary lists throughout the book.The book reads easily and is put together well; I especially like that throughout each story vocab is provided: one moment you can read a bolded French phrase such as 'la campagne' and its definition ('the countryside') will be provided in a list of French to English words after the paragraph ends. It makes remembering easier, and reading a lot smoother for non-fluent speakers.The larger vocabulary recaps at the end of each section/story are also very helpful to review or take notes for a student, as are the.mp3s at the very end of the book. The latter are helpful for hearing correct pronunciation, and supplement the rest of the book quite well if you listen along whilst using the book. Overall this is a great read and helpful to anyone just beginning to immerse themselves in the language!
I bought this book to brush up on my French because I started dating a French girl. I studied the language in middle and high school, but that was almost 20 years ago. I found this book was very appropriate to my reading and memory level. Plus my girlfriend thinks it is very cute to hear me read the simple yet engaging material in this book. The sentences are very direct and use a good variety of vocab. Many of the words I had learned and quickly remembered. Some were also totally new to me, which was great. The free audio version is an excellent compliment to the book. It's great to be able to listen to it on my iPod and practice in the car.However, I am not sure how far I would have gotten reading this book if I hadn't previously taken classes. There isn't any verb conjugation, and there were a few instances of a conjugated verb being used in the stories, but the indefinite form listed in the vocab list at the end. Perhaps adding notes about that or some basic verb conjugation would be helpful. Also, there are plenty of words I didn't know that were not in the vocabulary index at the end, so I definitely think it's best for someone with some exposure to the language already, not a total beginner. Then again, with the audio, a total beginner could really learn a lot of pronunciation and vocab from this book, so it will benefit those people as wellOverall, I give this 4.5 stars because it was almost exactly what I was looking for. It is a easy read to refresh my memory, pronunciation, and get the mouth muscles moving for those guttural r's.
